So according to wiki the atenza or Mazda 6 comes awd in many countries but the USA. I also read that the early platform is shared by ford, and they have some awd models  of the Mazda six that is based on. So what I’m wondering is how easily a standard Mazda six could be turned into all wheel drive utilizing parts from Ford? Yes I know the obvious answer is to simply buy a Mazda speed six , However those are not plentiful cars at all and I have a hard time finding one near me. Basically, school me on parts interchangeability between Mazda and ford all wheel drive vehicles

its funny that you mention this because there is a speed6 for sale locally here with blown engine turbo for 1800 and my old mazda 6wagon just came on the market...

I think you can make it AWD if you use the fusion/milan parts but you would likely go to an auto trans. It might be a little harder in the wagon vs sedan since the rear suspension is slightly different, or it may not matter at all!

In reply to Robbie :

I think that was the older Mondeo/Contour platform

Looks like the Ford Edge might be able to provide the rear axle components.

Or ya know, the MS6.

I do have to admit to thinking up a bench build for a rally Mazdaspeed6 with Ford Edge suspension parts to 'lift' it.

Why not just use parts from Mazda? Should have taken one home while you were here :) There is a few for sale locally.

The Fusion was never AWD in the same generation and the one that was it a lot longer wheelbase.

I don't have direct experience in this chassis but in converting a mirage to an Evo III clone, it was a lot of work. Typically the factory doesn't put all of the mounting points for the AWD gear into the chassis and there is a fair amount of cutting and welding involved and all of the parts for the AWD rear section are unique so you will have to basically source a back half of a car anyways. By the time you are said and done, I think it'll be cheaper to go and just find a MS6

I would think x type and Volvo would be where you want to look.

The Fusion had an AWD version in '07 I believe, definitely in the first generation.  They also had a version in second generation.

Edit:  Interestingly Wikipedia doesn't mention the first gen AWD model.  I read an article that suggested it was only available in the V6.  IMO the first gen Mazda 6 and Ford Fusion were great cars for what they were intended for.
