SEMA said: URGENT LEGISLATIVE ALERT Michigan Introduces Bill to Ban Most Aftermarket Exhaust Systems Legislation (H.B. 5726) to prohibit motor vehicle repair facilities from modifying an exhaust system to “produce noise in excess of OEM stock decibel levels” has been introduced in Michigan. Under the bill, a person who violates this prohibition would be forced to pay a fine of $10,000 for each violation. We Urge You to Contact Members of the Michigan House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee (List Below) Immediately to Oppose H.B. 5726 •Under Michigan law, a motor vehicle repair facility means “a place of business which engages in the business of performing or employing persons who perform maintenance, diagnosis, vehicle body work, or repair service on a motor vehicle for compensation . . .” •H.B. 5726 does not provide repair facilities with decibel readings on factory-installed exhaust systems. •H.B. 5726 ignores the fact that aftermarket exhaust systems are designed to make vehicles run more efficiently without increasing emissions. •H.B. 5726 would make it impossible for hobbyists to replace factory exhaust systems with durable, better performing options. •H.B. 5726 would saddle violators with excessive and unreasonable fines. DON’T DELAY! Please contact members of the Michigan House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee immediately to request their opposition to H.B. 5726.

Sounds like just the beginning folks, with the recent news of the EPA considering banning non-oem tuning and exhaust systems thanks to the coal rollers, now this bill in Michigan.....the future doesn't look very bright for our hobby.

Politicians have been introducing these sorts of bills for decades and they keep getting defeated, it's nothing new.

Eh, non-stock exhausts have been illegal in PA for years, but I don't see anyone enforcing it.

I sure as hell hope they don't come after the straight through exhaust I just ordered for my BMW bike.

They can't be talking about riders like you, Nick. You still use mufflers.

you won't bother me … you're in Texas and I'm in NC … and while loud Harleys are a royal PITA this is a bit to far even for them

Right, because the average rusted-away Michigan exhaust sounds a lot better/quieter than your average aftermarket exhaust...

Eh, bills like this get introduced every year. About 98% of them get killed. The SAN watches very closely for this kind of thing. I'm not worried

From the wording, it sounds like this bill is to prohibit SHOPS from modding exhaust in a way that exceeds oem levels. It also reads to me like the SHOPS will be the ones to be fined if found to be breaking the law.

Own a welder? Own a grinder? Do it yourself, and you have nothing to worry about!

Michigan - A state with so few problems, They have time to worry about car noise! Hoooraaaay Michigan!

The last time I was at a bike night - a couple weeks ago - there were a multitude of loud Harleys, but the ONLY bikes with open, straight-through, unmuffled exhausts, were the jackhole Japanese-based Crapfe racers.

Yeah, but they sound better than a radial engine with all but 2 cylinders knocked off puffing like a broken compressor.
