Have you seen how long they last? The cars in my fleet that have the original exhaust are 14 years old/156k miles, 13 years old/77k miles, and 10 years old/162k miles. And none of them are even close to needing replacement.

I have already accepted that by the time I reach the age of 90 the legislators in this country would have passed the law to slowly phase out all non autonomous internal combustion engine powered vehicles. We will all have to ride in the lowest bid contracted public transit self driving lounges. Federal EPA Enforcement Service will have drones that will identify any carbon fuel powered car and terminate them with a significant electrical discharge at the next instance the vehicle is at a stop.

I hate dickwads with any bike that has an unmuffled exhaust(they're usually harley riders in my area with the occasional hayabusa), coal rollers, and the rednecks who think complete straight pipes will make their smog era 2.8L Camaro be faster....but when E36 M3 like this gets brought up, I find myself strangely on a common ground.

Basically we are the horse riders of the 21st century, we will be phased out. Someone should start planning the auto amusement park and historical experience center that can be exempted from the laws and allow people to drive a car themselves on closed tracks!!!

Interesing choice. As a matter of principle, I can find no more common ground with those whose duche-baggery and selfishness ruins things for the rest of us than I do those whose over-reaction and ignorance ruins things for the rest of us...It makes me want to see both sides fail and lose out on what they wanted, purely for spite.

For what it's worth though, I've seen far more totally stock 90's cars (Civics, Saturns, etc.) "roll coal" than I have actually seen brodozers doing it.

The OEM exhaust on my '03 VW only lasted 10 years and 320K miles... what a POS...

I have no love for crotch-rockets either... as hordes of them love to race up and down I-95 at 3AM... My dog does that sound carry...

The one time I miss my Cummins is on Monday mornings during the Summer... so as I pass by the house on the corner of my street at 5AM, I could give it a quick "BRAP!!" when I made the turn... payback for him running his custom chopper at 7AM on a Sunday...

You guys are looking at this the wrong way. It's an opportunity for aftermarket performance exhaust manufacturers to drastically bring down the prices of exhaust systems like on the Veyron, capable of supporting 1000 hp while still being quiet.

But you CAN get a ticket for a loud exhaust of course it just happens very very very rarely. Ive lived here my whole life and I think I only know 1 person it happened to.

The only people that will give you a ticket for it is the police, its not an issue with annual inspections or anything.

I was given a ticket years ago for too loud exhaust. I asked the trooper what decibel reading he got and where. Said he didn't need it but to get the exhaust fixed. I asked him how is the repair shop supposed to know when it's fixed if they don't know what level it's supposed to be in the first place? He said he wasn't a mechanic not his problem. He said the same in court when I went in to fight it. Judge sided with him. I appealed. Didn't even make it into the courtroom on appeal. The ADA asked me in the hallway why I was appealing. I told him the lack of a decibel reading and the vagueness of the law, plus the inspection manual's description made the citation ridiculous. He agreed and tore the ticket up right then and there. $75 bucks for the appeal but no ticket. I won?

I like a nice sounding exhaust. I even like a loud exhaust on engines that sound good. But over the years I believe I have come to enjoy the induction sound more than the exhaust. Especially that great CHEW-WHAAAA when the secondaries on a Quadrajet open.

You want noise? Why don't we start producing aftermarket straight cut gear sets for manual gearboxes!

I've driven some old bikes with straight cut primary gears, and those babies can howl at high RPMs. That will definitely carry further than intake noise .

In my area, the only Coal Rollers that I've noticed have been young flat billers and red red neck kids. I'm old enough to remember when most diesel engines blew black smoke regularly, and I can't image why anyone who remembers those days would want to do that intentionally. I think they should be forced to spend a few months living in an industrial city in China as punishment.

Last month a bro-dozer rolled coal leaving a stoplight next to some guy in a z3 roadster and then balled out at about double the speed limit. At the next light the guy in the z3 launched hard and beat the truck to where the road merges to one lane. He then proceeded to drive 20mph under the 55 speed limit (on a road where passing is pretty much impossible) for the next 10 miles or so.

I laughed for a second until I thought about the fact that now I was behind the bro-dozer and also having to go 35mph on a windy woodland road. I entertained myself by watching the bro yell obscenities out the window and make wild hand gestures at the z3 while tailgating him. Just when it looked like the guy was going blow up and run over the bmw, the z3 make a quick turn onto a side road. The bro was so busy yelling at the long-gone z3 that he damn near ran into a ditch on a corner.

Overall, it was pretty entertaining. Almost made up for having to go slow on a fun road.

back on-topic, I've never had exhaust problems even in police-heavy northern virginia. I hear a lot of stories about exhaust stops, but I've never had police give a second look to my WRX (with SPT exhaust), or my GT6 with straight pipes, or my e30 with various loudish exhausts. I think the guys who get the tickets are just getting add-ons for their other douchey-driving violations.

Ever had to pass a decibel level test at an autocross?

We have to up here in Canuckistan.

A HUGE amount of variance in the test comes from the person holding the meter. Upwind, downwind, exhaust pointing up, exhaust pointing down, etc.

Lots of variables to make enforcement very difficult.

it's about equal 50/50 between straight pipe Harley's and scooters with the muffler internals pulled out … equally irritating in their own way … and my opinion of both is the same

why would anyone be required to support mediocrity ? 8n8 for the last 3 yrs straight … 2n7 in the playoffs in the last 17 yrs and with little chance to even make the playoffs this yr
