I say do it!! I have an auto search for sub $1k rx8s on my local Craig's and I get emails almost every week.

Some benefits of the rx8:
1. Huge wheel wells to swallow big tires and travel.
2. Ummmm Wankel noises?
3. I'm struggling here.
4.
Ok there may not be many benefits but they are cheap and a rally car would be awesome.
Do the automatic trans front brakes fit under 15s?

Looks like rotors from an auto car and making my own bracket for a wilwood caliper would get me there- might still have to run a lower offset than stock.
This is the best worst idea I’ve seen in awhile, and I mean that in the best possible way.
I truly hope this moves from the Interwebz to IRL.

Dang...I came here to post that.
RX-8`s are so cheap right now that I think they would make a great rally platform. When you scrap one, just get another 1000$ car and swap all the goodies over.
And another big plus for the RX-8: great brakes! For a rally car, that's a big plus.
And for the suspension: high sidewalls and longer/softer spring will help a lot.

OK. Take this, with its' gazillion little links attached to a gazillion little tabs and dumb shock mounts:
Sawzall a giant berkeleying hole in the car and do this instead, maybe with a panhard instead of the watts link:
The beauty is, if this is the car I am thinking about, it's an E30 M3 clone that also has a Volvo-based 16v engine.
There was an RX8 that ran back in 2006-7 or so. I think it won G2 class, then they supercharged it. Iwant to say the drivers name was Olson or something like that. No idea what ended up happening with the car.
