I'm on my phone so pix aren't at all easy but just google

"karakoram highway". 1300km China to Pakistan, long straights, sweepers and steep switchbacks that make the Eiger look like I 84. Think Pike's Peak for hours and hours and hours...normally, I'm thinking if it's on tarmac, I will roadtrip in my E55 cuz it eats miles like nothin's business. But this here, is more of a challenge.  So what car do you want to drive where services and infrastructure are scant, so you want tires and brakes to last a looong time. Likewise something that goes a long ways tween fillups. That is nice and comfy, cuz 1300km. Oh and you will be motoring at more than 15kft. So maybe the Atom isn't such a good idea after all. My car would eat its tires and brakes in 100 miles on roads like that. But I don't wanna drive something slow and boring there either.

Not that I'll ever get a chance, but that's not important. What car? What other variables am I missing compared to your typical USA x country drive? Go!

What can you get parts for in that area? I'm thinking of a diesel hilux.

I'm thinking something with an American V8 for reliability, and a body-on-frame construction for the ability to make repairs with a hammer and stick welder.  Perhaps...

Diesel Land Cruiser.  Can comfortably go anywhere, can get parts most places, can get fuel most places, and is unlikely to break.
