What about a nissan v6 I know it's not a v8 obviously but should be lighter and they are in everything from almitmas to minivans to the 350z. Should be good for 300hp
I say the vortec Chevy. Th350 is a good trans that's very common and doesn't Rob the same power that a 400 does.

Thanks Hive. Y'all've (you're really southern if you can contract three words together) confirmed a lot of my thoughts. Don't want to do a V6 and I actually have one I'm getting rid of because it doesn't fit what I want. But I was wondering if there were any v8s that I had missed.
I just did a Ford 302 swap, with a mild cam upgrade and an Explorer intake & TB. I don't know what RWHP I'm getting, but I will after the GRM Dyno Day in May. Assuming I haven't blown the fool thing up at the track before then.
I'm not 100% sure but if I had to do it over again, I might skip the EFI and just plop a carb on it. Even though I had the motor & efi from the same donor car, it takes extra time to get the whole wiring harness transferred over. The Explorer heads will flow enough air, supposedly, to get you to 300 flywheel, but they need better valve springs. I skipped them, so I don't know. No way I've ever heard of to get even close to 300 with the E7 (Mustang, etc.) heads. The Explorer cam is all down low, so that's probably a swap unless this is just an autocrosser.
I LOVED the idea of doing something with that BMW M6x engine. Such a weird series of motors. But after shopping around for one for nearly a year, I never found one that wasn't a sketchy proposition. The S70 V12 would be the bragging rights, but only 1,500 made, so . . . .

I'm all about sketchy propositions. Only someone stupid like me would be searching all of FL Craigslist for sub $500 BMWs.

It's going to be awesome! Come visit, and I'll tell you about all the Challenge loopholes I'm planning to close.

But the real question is would I have to include the dyno time in my Challenge budget?

That depends on whether you're making more power when you leave than when you arrived.

How about the LT1?
Yeah I would think this is the easy button here. Get a Buick Roadmaster or Caprice from the 90s, pull the drive train, done.
That was exactly my thoughts if I ever did the Challenge; find 80's G-body, find B-body with an LT1 and a bad transmission (not hard, reverse seems to be a weak spot in the factory 700R4) and either rebuild 700R4 or go find a TH350. Also use B-body parts for bigger brake upgrade on the front and maybe other items like springs or whatever to add stiffness.
