So I was talking to a few friends and we were trying to decide the best car, including mods, that can be bought for $5,000.
We were more talking 1/4 mile time than anything.
Would be interested in what you all have to say. can we hit the 10's with $5,000 including purchase price of the car? Will it handle? Will it be reliable?
For handling, autox work Nb1 miata with FM stage 1 kit and sticky tires
For drag, 1/4 mile times the cheapest foxbody you could fine (mustang, t-bird, fairmont, doesn't really matter) with a turbo 5.0.

Great questions. Even better if it were turned into an annual competition.
Pretty sure this has been done. Gutted early fox, at that price probably a truck LS, DRs.....profit?
Does it need to be street legal?
For auto-x tossup between shifter kart and F500 for FMOD.
Seriously, you could probably buy a car similar to that pictured for considerably less than $5k. Only hitch is that it wouldnt be able to do roadracing (rollbar rules change, look into it). Only faster classes are Amod, Bmod, FSAE, and Karts. Hell, with some searching you might even be able to find an older roadrace legal car for $5k.
for drag, whats the lightest V8 car from ford or chevy from the 80's that noone wants?

For the 1/4 mile, maybe an LS powered truck? I’m thinking a 4.8 or 5.3 swapped s10. Maybe add some eBay turbos?
Yep. $1500 shifter kart chassis with a $1500 Kawasaki KX500 engine. You'll get one run at the dragstrip before they kick you out, so make sure you get a good launch!
Foxbody platform car, t bird or any other non mustang will be cheaper. Control arms, shocks/struts, lightness, 351w with boost or nitrous. There's a reason the fox platform is the go too cheap drag platform. It works really well, is lightweight and has a massive new and used aftermarket

An FSAE car with an R6 motor was the most fun I’ve ever had on wheels. I so wish they made those for the street.
All depends on your time to do these modifications. Cheap 4th gen camaro/bird and 100-150 shot of nitrous for simplicity. Probably not 10s, maybe mid 11s.
Foxbody or 3rd-gen Camaro, with a bunch of spray or a blow-through turbo could get you 10s for under $5k. But you need a cage if you plan to stay at the drag strip, and don't plan on it lasting too long.
Bring your friends to the Challenge and see. Just take what you see and then figure out how much faster you could go with the extra $3000 !
For drag? RCSB GMT800 with the 5.3, sloppy stage 2 cam, .96 AR ebay turbo, ebay water to air intercooler, HPTuners to keep ECU stuff cheap, drag tires.
Hit 10's, handle well, be reliable, all under $5000 (car purchase included)..... we're a spoiled bunch!

Foxbody chassis is not so super and most of them have twisted rusty torque boxes by now.
Take the motor and T5 and plop it in a stripped E36 chassis with a straight-through exhaust and stiffer springs in the stock suspension. Turbo or nitrous as necessary to get your drag time. Medium case LSD will probably stand up to a few runs to prove your point. Thereafter, it will actually handle and behave well as a Conehead or Track Rat car.
Could be a 240 Z With a SB chevy and a buttload of Nitrous would get you there, UNLESS 9.5's aren't enough that extra 3 grand could put some folks in the 6's. Just Guessing here!!!!!!!!
Oh But Hey , I am from an Era where 200 was Fast, at....... Well Never mind
