The question we need to be asking ourselves is:
When you overboost and kill the motor, will an LS fit in its place?

or better yet, will the SL65 Black motor/tranny fit in his place so you can make a baby slr?

I think it'd be more fun to make similar power for about 1/8th the price of the motor / trans package found in an AMG Black type SL65. Plus the LSx would probably pull better mileage with less weight added.

ahh, but a C265AMG Black could run in Street Mod...

I worked a corner with Lynn 4 or 5 years back at a Regional event when he was regularly auto-xing his Mercedes. IIRC he didn't like it and didn't feel it was competitive.

I seems like any "is this going to be reliable" type threads end with, "well, will an LS series engine fit?"
I love it, because that way I don't have to say it.
When my Dad cringed at me buying a yurappean car (JDs tbrick) I pacified him by saying "There is a new pick and pull junkyard in town, engines go for $250, anything that turns the driveshaft thataway ::motioning:: will work and fit.
That's the way I would approach it. It is easy to make a car run like you want, a lot tougher to get it to look like you want.

These are getting cheap, and I like the looks of the hatchbacks. Also there aren't many other choices in the rwd manual hatchback department (basically this and slightly older 318ti) and these are supercharged to boot!
How bad an idea would one of these be for a fun, fuel efficient dd?
Buddy of mine has a c230 and the part prices to maintain it is a bit crazy. I wouldn't do it, personally.
My wife had one when we met. The interior bits were cheap and falling apart. The second time it puked all of its transmission fluid (auto) we got rid of it. Repairs were Mercedes expensive. Other than that, it was a lot of fun to drive.

Friends of ours have a 2003 that they picked up cheap. They enjoy it and do all of their own work. The biggest issue is parts cost. They have a back up car so if something goes wrong they let it sit until they find the parts for the right price.
I've been tempted to pick one up because I really like the styling but they just don't have the reliability to dd unless you have some deep pockets.

I had already marked both of those as favorites on CL before I saw this. Not sure if I'm brave enough to go through with it though. I am really put off by the negative comments, particularly considering the other cars folks on this board aren't scared of.

Yes, because Mercedes was too fancy to use a blower bypass like every other Eaton installation in the world, and they had to go for a method that was way more expensive and complicated.
It is probably related to how they are also the only blow-through Eaton installation, too. But, heck. VW did a blow through positive displacement supercharger without having to resort to a clutched blower, they just had a simple linkaged bypass on the throttle body.
BTW, the electric clutch is just an Air Conditioning compressor clutch and in fact its similar to the ones used on mid-90's BMW's Unfortunately they fail quite often and are expensive from Mercedes.
