It will be built in very limited quantities, so read on to learn how you can pre-order a rare BRZ.
WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS INTENTIONALLY?

I remember a certain company doing this with a "rare" 2-seat roadster that was only going to be made for one year...
What was it called again?
Anyway, they do it to create buzz, PR, and false rarity so they can "sell out" right away. That justifies further production, etc.
My understanding was that they're gambling pretty heavily on car so the result is them being pretty tepid about a full on commitment. If they sell all 6k of them in a short time they'll be back in force next round (with an OEM turbo I hope.)
I'm pretty interested to see how well this car does for all the excitement that it's generating.
pretty typical marketing. They will be built in low quantities probably - initially - until Subaru is sure that it will sell them. They're probably still remembering things like the 2008 WRX, or the Tribeca (all years), where they sat on lots forever....
beats the "Accord Special Edition" and other such blatantly lame "buy this RARE car" promotions. At least the BRZ will be cool...
Cool looking. Still remains to be seen if it's going to be any good. Toyota's gotten really good at beigemobiles and priuseseseses lately. Subaru still has some soul, but i'm worried they might have spent that all on looks and paint.

Wait, Wut? Subaru has always been cool in-spite of ass-ugly cars. The best looking car they ever had was the Impreza 2.5 RS and it was about as exciting as a mid 90s Nissan 200SX.
Are you telling me they have a good looking car in the works?
I think the BRZ looks pretty BA, personally. Saw one in person at the auto show. I'd rock it. then again, I'd rock an SVX and those are some GOOFY lookin' cars. So maybe I need to get my eyes checked again. Plus, WRB.

I've rocked a few 'burus that were completely awesome (including an Outback Wagon that could catch snowmobiles) but I can't say I ever glanced longingly at a picture of one. When SAAB can improve the way your best design looks you know you suck at aesthetics.

If this is true, why is Subaru the unofficial car of the lesbian?

Have you seen what real lesbians look like. It's not what the informational videos on the internet would have you believe...

I... er... um... how the hell did that become and either/or truth test?
Why is an orange? Because a vest has no sleeves.

Classic
I worked for subaru when the STi came out in north America... it was the same then.. They are capitalizing on demmand.
When the miata came out in 89 my friends father mazda dealership was AUCTIONING them off...
Makes me wonder how Scion will handle the FR-S's launch. Scion sells cars a la carte, at a set price (like Saturn used to), and lets you choose what options you want, no haggling involved. If they don't try any douchery like an inflated MSRP or jacking up paperwork costs, Toyota could get a big boost for people who missed out on the BRZ.

Comfortable shoes, dude.
It's simple.
The Subaru is the one that the car magazines say is the fun car. The Scion is the one that the magazines test and wonder WTF, this thing is a compact Camry in its blandness.
So, Subaru figures, they might as well cash in on the fact that their version doesn't suck, while the people trading up from tCs to FTs (or whatever the thing is called) don't know what they're missing.

I will let you know how it all works out...I put a deposit down a week ago. Second on the list for this dealer.
The contract is writen as "Subject to test drive and delivery before july 2012". Cost in the driveway is going to be right around 35k.This is Canadain dollars and market prices. Not much discusion on options other thna color or automatic vs six speed.
Subaru was taking orders, but no conditions were being accepted.
In reply to NOHOME:
Were you one of the folks selected as the First 86, or was that a US-only contest?
Jeez, July? I was kind of hoping it would be out sooner.

I put July 2012 down as the "drop dead I want my deposit back because I need a new car" date.
The dealer says second half of may to june is more likely. As I said, lets see how it unfolds.
This was just a walk in to the dealer and put your money down deal.
