I have been told all sorts of things, but I want to hear what GRM has to say.

Cam is the exhaust cam from my 07 BPY 2.0 GTI. Has some scoring. Never had an issue per se, but I want to make sure all goes back together better than I found it.

Its a steel cam in a aluminum head.  Obviously.

I have heard WD40 and emory cloth, I have hear Muriatic acid and scotchbrite pads, I have heard quite a few ways and just dont which way to go!

What ever you use wash it six times with soap and water afterwords.

I always heard wiping the lobes is bad. cheeky

Appreciate that.  Doesnt need much - enough to make me feel I left it better than it was.

Not the lobes, just the journals.

The 3/4" wide strips of emery paper are perfect for this.  Used to keep big rolls of the stuff, 300 grit.  You can also "kill" it by rubbing the friction surface against itself in kerosene or penetrating oil, makes it more of a polishing paper than a cutting abrasive.

can you catch a finger nail on that??   When I need to, I'll take the cam to the machine shop and get the journals buffed... doesn't cost a great deal....

My bigger concern is,  1) the cam journal in the head...  and 2) if the clearances will be ok after you buff the cam, and "address" the journals.....

This!  What does that journal on the head look like?

Wouldn't muriatic etch the metal? That seems undesirable.

The acid would be for de-rusting. Not going to do much for the finish...

As mentioned can you catch a finger nail on it? My go to has always been ignore it if It doesn't catch a fingernail. Heck sometimes when I can catch a fingernail I still ignore it (GM cam bearings, I'm talking about you).

Emery cloth would be my go to, If I thought it was too bad.

Is that the 2.0 TSi motor? If it is, I'd be a little more careful than most, I know some of them have weird idle oil pressure issues, from tore up cams and cam bridges

It's a FSI engine. Yes. The head looks fine as does the cam girdle. Maybe a little bit but nothing bad. IMO. The journals do catch a little of the nail. I had no issues. And short of pullin this to replace the intake cam. Would have never noticed it. I'll take pics in the morning. Thanks fellas.

This, Also may happen to the next one if it got a slug of junk in there that is cleaning out of the oil port in the head, esp if it's just the one bearing surface. I would think these stock cams are cheap/easy to find though if you don't want to fool with it.

The cam isn't the issue per se. more the journals.
