My apologies, I'd usually take the time figuring this out on my own. I'm new to Volvo's, this one has issues, and I'm trying to do some diagnosing today so there's the chance to order in parts before the storm hits this weekend.
I think I was spoiled w/ realOEM for bmw's. What's the closest for Volvos? Best forum/dedicated site?
Since the 960 is the newer generation motor in the older generation chassis, it seems to not get full attention anywhere I've noticed yet.
The main problem is sludgy coolant, which I didn't catch before purchasing. Can't tell if it's oil, or mismatched coolant, or maybe atf. I saw something about later gens having problems w/ atf/coolant mixing at a busted cooler, but need to research more. Engine oil looks OK, and I haven't noticed any white smoke yet.
Not sure if it can help with your problem but I can lose myself for days at http://turbobricks.com.

Turbo bricks is good for the older stuff, I haven't had any whiteblock cars so I'm not sure what the best forum for them is.
www.ipdusa.com for parts.
Turbobricks probably knows a good bit about the 960s, as the 960 Turbo still had the older redblock engine (so I'm sure a few on there have played with them).

Real helpful group of folks. I used to be real active there, but nothing groundbreaking has happened with 850/S/V70s in at least a decade, and my tolerance for folks who post with out searching has greatly diminished.
Matt changed the format a few years ago, to where you have to be a member to view images uploaded to the forum, which is annoying, and silly in my opinion. My silent protest was to go to hotlink to photobucket, but most still upload directly to the site, novel idea coming from GRM.

Brickboard or volvospeed, beweary of what goes on in there, I don't stray that way but they should have some whiteblock info. Turbobricks might have some but there's douchyness there too so tread carefully.
I have no experience with Brickboard, but heed chiodos warning about Volvospeed. There's some legit Whiteblock performance info there. However, it abounds with juvenile douchebaggery, and a whole lot of groupthink. Don't come in with any new ideas of your own, and expect a warm welcome.

thanks guys. just looking up pics of the radiator let me confirm that it has an integrated transmission cooler. The transmission is wonky as well, so I'm hoping that's the problem.

For parts, Tasca is the place to go.
I like turbobricks a lot. There's a bit of an arrogant, holier-than-though air sometimes, but they know their E36M3. Especially if you plan on mods. I don't have much experience with volvospeed, but it seems like they tend to focus on newer FWD stuff.
Oh, Swedespeed is cool too.
