I got my 626 from Oregon and it is super clean underneath with 240k on it.
Unless you're looking for a restoration project, I feel the desert states aren't the best places to look because the sun destroys interiors.

I thought the Carolinas were among the recommended states...
...and like has been said, I'd rather replace interior panels all day and have a nice, clean rust-free (for the most part) body and suspension to work on. Heck I can drive with a crappy interior.
Now if I could only narrow my focus on WHAT to look for...!

I can't say I agree with that map. I've bought a couple 15 year old rust free trucks in Kentucky.
The Carolinas have rust free cars as long as you stay away from the mountains or the coast. My 1988 MX-6 is spotless. Spent it's entire life in Charlotte. Growing up there, we didn't have rusty cars, except for all the rust buckets the Yankees brought down with them.
Teeeee for Texas. Bring a compression tester because engineers in Michigan, Japan, and Germany have difficulty believing that a cooling system actually has to keep up with Texas road temperatures.
