Yeah its been done a few times. Aftermarket suspension and the differential from an RX7 seem to be the common recipe. I was really heavily considering making mine rally-crossable.
Instead of doing something cliché like shoehorning something massive into the Miata (no offense, patgizz, your idea is actually pretty awesome), why not take the engine, transmission, and rear and jam it into something massive? Like a heavy-duty pickup truck, or a 1990s Camaro. Then boast about how awesome that new vehicle is.
Even better: farm that entire job out to an intern. Then make that intern win something with it. 
Take a FWD hatch of your choice, cut the floor out, drop the body onto the Miata's floor pan and drive train.
