you sir, are very perceptive
Before you begin any mods be sure to address the cooling system & check the stock injectors for leaks if it still has them. Brian at Lower Shores Performance can get set up up with a number of options for the stock fuel rail. Starquest forums will be your new friend.

Regarding the exhaust, we did it knowing we were going to use bigger turbos in the future. At that time I don't really remember any issues with off boost performance, that turbo is so small and the engine so big that you're almost always on boost . The way I see it, the turbo alone will produce all the back pressure you're going to need, and what I want is to reduce "off boost" time as much as possible, which means I need quicker spool up and a bigger exhaust. But honestly, a straight 2.5 with mandrel bends (not crushed) should more than fine for the stock turbo.
BTW: You should start a build thread!
Are you going to run this beast around the cones some next year? I have always loved these cars and would love to check it out in person!
MA$$hole - the po had the injectors replaced, as they were leaking, so at least that's covered. I'll be looking over the cooling system thoroughly as soon as I get my hands on it, which should be Monday. I've been all over StarQuestClub the last week or so - great site!! TopEndPerformance also has some great info.
zpeed7 - that makes perfect sense, I never really considered the smallish turbo in the back pressure equation.
garaithon - that's the plan!!! Still mainly the Miata, but the Conquest will see some cone duties too.
