Apparently there is a bounty on my car. In the last few months both of my bumpers on my Focus have been either gouged or crushed on multiple occasions.

I wish I had the time, space and talent to completely strip and repaint using proper tools, but the repairs will be power hand tools and rattle cans. I have a local supply store that supposedly will mix up factory paint into spray cans so I am hoping I can also add some flex additive.

Stripping: The paint on my rear bumper is a 10 year old respray which is flaking off in massive amounts. I need to sand off the damaged paint: a) What grit should I use? b) what type of sander would be best - palm orbital sander? I have one of those small quarter sheet type sander and it is useless. Any recommendations?

Prep: Are there some spray adhesives to assist in bonding to the plastic that I should pick up?

Hole repair: I will need to use some bumper repair bondo type of product. How to I best prep to make sure the filler stays in place?

When cleaning just before priming/painting, etc... Will wiping down with tack cloths do the job?

Paint: Should I sand/wet sand between coats? I worry the spray can will not put down enough paint for sanding between coats.

Any other ideas are appreciated.

Buy a new bumper. My 1995 Civic front bumper was $43.00 For the total time and quality of repair its worth it. You can paint the bumper and put it on without much down time. With the time and money you save you can buy a small compressor and sprayer. Bonus if you repair and sell the old one!

In reply to clownkiller:

Because I have a SVT as opposed to a regular Focus, my front bumper is at the cheapest $300 unpainted and the rear is about the same. Plus I have no need to put on ~$1000 worth of new parts and paint just to have them hammered again. I want presentable, but I don't expect perfect. I expect rattle can touch ups on a regular basis.

Even used parts off the boards are expensive, and the used parts would likely need repainting so no win there.
