Check on the ECU or whatever they call the main brain box. I think 2014 is right around the time Tesla switched from the 1st model to the 2nd model. The 1st model has the solid state memory with a limited number of flops that started going bad, which was partially blamed on the OTA update frequency. I think the part was about $2.5k when I was considering one of these a few years ago.

It sounds like the decision is already made, but the pricing isn't out of line with a "power unit" repair on any other luxury car.  They wanted 21k to do an engine on mine, so you're getting out cheap!

Are the CEOs actively participating in politics on the same level?  If not, not sure how you compare em.

Also. Its a used vehicle.  You aren't providing money to the company at that point.

That's the beauty of a car with its own dedicated in-house charging network and locked in parts supply.  Unless you make a Herculean effort in ways that would make off-grid types wince, you ARE.

This goes for any manufacturer.

Give away the handles, make money on the razor blades.

GM gets like $250-300 when you need a module reflashed.  It's everywhere.

The most expensive hockey tickets I ever got were the free ones from my Snap-On guy one year.

I put a brand new engine in my Suburban a couple years ago for $3500. A transmission would probably set me back another 2K at least. 10 large for some freakshow proprietary tech in a "look at me" car doesn't seem all that weird.

That's a heart-stopping repair bill, and it would sink me--but it's not that dissimilar from what a Porsche owner would experience if their 997/987 engine had bore scoring or a RMS failure.

That’s a fair analogy.

Except I suspect the Porsche bill would be more like 2-3x higher.

It does have the updated MCU2, that was one of the selling points when I bought the car. That upgrade will run you $2,500.

FWIW I did ask Chris if I could have the old motor. Apparently it has to go back to the mothership. :(

Exactly, and note that Chris did buy the car and park it next to his Volkswagen.

The difference from those other brands, though, is how quickly the brand's perception is changing, and how tough it is to forecast resale value because of that. I've been watching Tesla values for years, and they're now dropping faster than I've ever seen. It creates some great deals--like Chris's car--but also means a $20,000 asset might suddenly not be one tomorrow.

Perhaps.  I think that's more driven by the market than the CEO's politics though.  Hertz took a bath on the Teslas they bought because the resale prices on them dropped significantly and that was several years ago.  For a long time Teslas were the only option in "real" EVs -- basically everything else on the market was either a compliance car or a woeful attempt at imitation that came far short of what Tesla could do.  While I won't say that the other automakers have completely caught up, the gap between them and a Tesla has narrowed a lot, so there's a lot more competition and that has brought prices down.

I also tend to ignore resale value when I make purchase decisions because I rarely keep a car for less than 7-8 years and that's so far out that it's not really relevant.

As far as expensive engines go, the junkyard S54 I bought for my E46 race car was $6500, and that was before it got new rod bearings.

The CEO's behavior is definitely hurting Tesla resale value today, and probably more so in the aspirational S than the more mundane 3/Y.

The Hertz loss was in large part because Tesla was cutting the MSRP on new cars, which of course drove down the resale of used ones. There was a lot of weirdness in the market.

I also don't pay attention to resale when purchasing because I'm not very good at selling cars :) I'm sure the resale on our 3 has dropped quite a bit of late but it has not affected how it works.

It had crossed my mind as an option if the repair quote came in at a price where cutting ties before repair made sense.

With enough cheap and broken Teslas out there, I would think that people would be soon be tearing them apart and learning how to hack the computers just for fun, or just to learn about EVs. I know Tesla would fight this but what can they do? As they get older, the wrecking yards will fill up with them. And if more people learn about fixing EVs, wouldn't that be a good thing. The kid who is hacking old Teslas today could end up working as a technician for Tesla tomorrow.

People have been hacking tesla and making ridiculously (ludicrously?) Fast cars for about 10 years now.

Elect8c cars are cool.  This car is cool.  So it needs a new engine?  That sucks.  But, that not new to cars.  Just the tech is.

Fix it, keep it, blow the doors off of pretty much every project car grm has.

I'd pay 19k for a car that I can daily with 700 hp!

Tesla's MO for repair work is to have three or four cheap, untrained warm bodies doing the work and one person in the group directing them what to do.  They don't want too many competent people, because that costs money.  They'd rather hire people who weren't good enough for the McDonald's drive-thru.

Stopped reading at the first paragraph where it turned into veiled political ranting.   One of the things that used to appeal to me about these forums and the magazine was the relatively unbiased and non political stance taken.  Agree or disagree with the opinion I do car stuff to escape the overhead noise of the current political climate.  Sadly now this is one more outlet which no longer fulfils that requirement.

My only real contribution to this is there are several relatively prominent Tesla hackers in the general vicinity. I know via the BoostedBoiz youtube channel- Kyle over there has been doing wierd E36 M3 with them for a while and he gets all his fixes and hacks from his wrecked ones from another local tuber. Might be worth reaching out???

There is one idea nobody has brought up...

Can you bypass the RDU and drive the car around with just the front motor? That would make basically a 250 hp front-wheel-drive sedan, right? It's just like a fancy Accord!
