I didn't get through all the posts, so forgive me if this has been mentioned already. Weber State's John Kelly did a youtube video on the model S drive unit and he mentions where they have had issues. It's been a while since I watched it, so I don't recall the details. It's a great video to watch to learn about the unit in general and maybe help you decide what you want to do going forward.
Here's another opportunity to roll the dice and do it for less than a third of the professional price, except it's on the wrong side of the country:

Good news, I picked up the car yesterday and drove it home. As much as it hurt to spend the money, like many of you have pointed out, at the end of the day $19,000 is still not a bad deal for this car especially now that the drive unit has a 4-year 50K mile warranty. I am still considering if I want to keep it or move on to the next car but at the moment I am leaning towards keeping it for a little longer.

I'm surprised to hear you say you're thinking of getting rid of it at all...
you'll have a hard time reclaiming what you've spent on your drive unit replacement..
I don't see why you wouldn't keep running it for a few years to get some use for yourself out of this car!

I can't describe it fully, but there's something deliciously steampunk-y about seeing a Tesla power unit hanging from an old-school engine hoist.
