Edit: Oops! Wrong page. Can mods please move this to "Off Topic"?

SWMBO has the more established and more lucrative career than me. Looking into the potential of relocating to advance her position. That means either Des Moines or Columbus. I suspect I will prefer Columbus and that it will have more opportunities for me.

Anyone from there or near there who can help me out by answering a few questions, I'd appreciate a PM.

Thanks in advance.

PM'd

We have some good breweries here but not on the scale of North Coast.

PMed, although I probably know less about Columbus beer than Evan, I do have some knowledge.

Ahem, "Great Lakes Brewery" ahem

Yes Great Lakes is awesome, as is the Brew Kettle in Strongsville. Bit of a commute from Columbus though unless you lived in the middle and each had an hour commute in opposite directions.

Columbus has a lot more motorsports of any flavor within reasonable driving distance.

Just sayin'.

I used to race sailboats with a girl who is a Public Relations Assistant at Great Lakes Brewing Company(GLBC). I could drop something to her personal or professional email address, if that helps.
Nice girl:

Keep in mind, GLBC is in Cleveland which is 2 hours north of Columbus.

Columbus is a nice town. What I like most about it is that the people who live there really seem to like it! Columbus has a version (or at least small version) of everything you typically might want. It is also a great town to be young in given the whole University scene.

Ohio Craft Brewery Map and in addition, Budweiser has a large brewing facility in Columbus.

I lived in Columbus from 1999-2010. First OSU campus, then the Victorian Village and finally bought a house on the east side around Brice. It really is a great town with a varied economy (unlike the one-trick pony of southeast Michigan) which means a variety of jobs. This means it is populated by people from other areas. It seems nobody over 20 is actually FROM Columbus. This gives it a more diverse feel.

Be warned- It is first and formost a college football town. People arrange their lives around if the Buckeyes are on. My old boss would be a bear on Mondays if OSU didnt win or didnt win by enough ("They shoulda scored another 45 points on Northeast Cosmotology College!!!"). However gametime is a good time to go shopping or eat at places that dont have TVs.

The weird thing about Columbus is that there's no sprawl. Once you're a few miles outside of 270, there's just nothing.

This is in stark contrast to, say, Cleveland, where the suburbs extend a couple counties in all directions but north and it's practically one city all along I-77 down to Canton an hour away.

You say this like it's bad thing. Actually, I think Northeast Cosmo is on the schedule this year.

Late 40's, born and raised, OSU grad, yada, yada. Let me know if I can help. Don't know much about the beer scene, however.

SWMBO would be woeking in Columbus proper. 2hours away would make a hefty commute for at least one of us.

The idea of Bud is a tough one. The compensation would be nice. But it would not be a labor of love like craft beer. Plus SWMBO would have the opportunity to make better money.

Just because Bud is based there doesn't mean you have to drink the crap. Just roll your windows up when you get near the northern junction of I-71 and I-270 so you don't have to smell it.

Sure. But I am not just talking about drinking that crap. I am talking about making that crap.

You go for the visiting teams, not the Blue Jackets. They usually have some decent ticket deals since they're not selling out all that much.

I get this by email The Beer Blog Ohio. It seems like Ohio in general is sprouting breweries all over the place.

In Columbus I like The Elevator and Barlies and here is a partial list I found:

•Columbus Brewing Company - 525 Short St, Columbus

•Barley's Brewing Company - 467 N. High St., Columbus

•Barley's Smokehouse and Brewpub - 1130 Dublin Rd., Columbus

•Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant - 401 N. Front Street, Columbus

•Hoster Brewing Company - 760 Harmon Ave., Columbus

•Elevator Brewery & Draught Haus - 161 N High St, Columbus

•Zauber Brewing Company - 1300 Norton Ave, Columbus

•Seventh Son Brewing Co. - 1101 N 4th St, Columbus

•North High Brewing Company - 1288 N High St, Columbus

•Four String Brewing Company - 985 W 6th Ave, Columbus

I am friends with one of the managers at Gordon Biersch and would be happy to talk to him.

In reply to Rusted_Busted_Spit:

I really enjoyed Elevator when I was in Columbus for work (I'm an attorney in Pittsburgh).

I was steered away from Barley's Brewing as having only so-so beer, so perhaps they could use the help. My last name is Barley, so I need a reason to go back and at least get a T shirt.
