The other day I got bored and tallied up all the cars I've driven and what they cost and what I sold them for. Turn out that in 14 years of driving I have spent roughly $20k, not including current vehicles (her second hand camry and my $1k S10), repairs, insurance or fuel.

Apparently I have spent $1428 per year to own a car. That is not bad considering more people than not are spending that in three months of car payments.

How much do you spend annually to own cars?

I don't want to know. Cars are fun and if I knew what I spend on them it may kill the fun.  smiley

You clearly do not live in michigan. Our insurance with a clear record and myself getting closer to 40 on a suv is a good 100/month (1200/yr) .  I'm way way over what you spent with boring SUV driving alone.

* edit....duh, just re-read your post..excluding all this crap above^

I spend to much is the quick response.

To LEASE my Elantra Sport, I pay $3804 a year to finance, plus approx $1426 a year in fuel, plus 2062 a year to insure the thing, plus oil changes  (~$150 a year)sad

EDIT:  $7442 a YEAR TOTAL - OUCH!

I'm not really sure that you can make this a fair comparison without including repair costs. Obviously the used cars will still come out way ahead, but still not really a fair or accurate description.

This formula applies only to the DD toasters over the ten years that we keep them:

Whatever the cost of the car, divide by ten. Then whatever the result of the division is, use that as yearly operating cost.

So, FRS is $32,000 to buy.

Divide by ten get $3,200 as annual operating cost to include fuel insurance and whatever.

The yearly depreciation is $3,200 also, ( I depreciate to $0 over ten years cause there is always a needy friend or family member who needs a car)  so combine the depreciation and operating cost for $6400/ year transportation expense. the versa works out to about $4400

Over the 10 years that we keep a new car, it works out.  Since I work in a pure cash world, ten years gives me enough time to save the $$$ for the next car.

Don't ask about project cars. Different accounting system altogether but oddly enough, similar numbers.

In reply to mtn :

Not really looking to make this a comparison. More because I'm curious. I would have included repair costs if I could remember them. Just think of it as ownership cost, not operational cost.

HAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

Yeah I am not doing that math.

Oh crap I did the math.

The Viper alone runs me almost 8K a year in interest if I had invested the money, tires, track fees, registration, sales tax and insurance. All in I bet its at least 18-20K a year for all the cars mainly as I own them all outright and they are not really appreciating assets. I would be much better off if I had sold them all and just left the money in the market.

Mechanical projects aside, I spend a little less than 3k a year for DD operating cost including insurance, fuel, and certain things I farm out to my mechanic (like the clutch). Works about to about $250 a month which is totally reasonable to me. When I'm into a project, I don't calculate costs because it's depressing and counterproductive.

It's odd but 15 years of new daily drivers every 3-4 years used to average out to $5,000 a year (not counting insurance).  The '96 Miata I sold last year cost be about $7,000 for a little over 5 years.  So about $1,400 a year, plus insurance.   I always used to think I could abandon the '96 on the side of the road after 2 years and be money ahead of my "new car" habit.

No idea. Same as the gas mileage of any of my trucks, I've never once considered finding out what it actually is because I don't really care.

I do know the dakota has paid for itself a few times over with loaded scrapyard runs.

I purchased my current daily in 2011.  I've spent $8025.32 on fuel.  I've spent $2872 on maintenance, repairs, modifications, taxes, and tags.  I purchased it for $3000.  Its current value is probably around $1500

Total cost comes to $12397.  Over 6.5 years, thats $1900/year.  Over 79,500 miles, that's .156/mile

Thankfully, those costs are going down.  In 2017 I spent $729.26 on gas and $410 on other stuff (much of which was stupid modifications), meaning my cost was $1139 for the year.

Insurance is a wildcard because it depends on what else I have insured at the time.  The cost for any one car is not separated on my policy.

For a direct comparison to the first post, my car has depreciated approx $1500 over 6.5 years, so its cost would be $230/yr
