I know that some of you have had success shipping vehicles long distance and I am now in need of such. Can anyone recommend some companies to look at?

I am moving the family from Atlantic City, NJ to Denver, CO in a couple months and do not want to make that drive with a 3 year old nor my wife either... I think I will keep my '05 Subaru Legacy GT Wagon since it is a lot of fun, pretty comfortable, functional and it is the Devil that I know.

I have already been shown the high end of the scale but would rather not spend a fortune on a cheap car that isn't anything more than a glorified grocery getter breathing at 20psi. Help me, please, my frugal friends.

I've used Uship before as a way to get local bids. I pick the one who bids on the job with the best reviews and contact them directly rather than through the Uship site. I've paid $100 less than the lowest bid when I've done it this way.

I'm sure it's against the rules but the shippers don't bat an eye.

I too have used Uship like 4 or 5 times.  All were cheap, challenge price-like cars.  All ran and all were shipped open trailer.

In my cases I had bought the car and was now ready to have it shipped to me.  In all cases I chose the "Name your own Price" version of Uship.  In al cases I gave the lowest price that Uship would allow me to.

My cars were a combination of ready to go but not too much of a hurry.  I highlighted on the listing that the car could be picked up as soon as today and as late as 2 weeks from now.  I also highlighted that I could receive the car as soon as tomorrow and as late as 2 weeks.

With the NOW aspect you are trying to attract a shipper who is passing your car and will get it now if the load is a "sure thing" and ready to go.  With the 2 Weeks aspect you are trying to attract a shipper who is building a load for a trip.  Both of those situations worked for me various times.

When you do a Uship "name your own price" it then opens up the "Chat" function with potential shippers.  If you name a price of $500, expect that you will get messages saying, "we can do it for $800."  Use that open dialog as much as you want to negotiate.  Just  know that everyone (all potential shippers) can see your chat.  So, if you tell the $800 guy you will do it for $600 then don't expect any shipper to come in less than $600 since you have shown your hand to all the shippers.

Also hidden in the Uship T's&C's is  that once your price is met you will be hit with an additional 7% fee so $500 becomes $535.

All my Uships were Independent operators and looked like this....

3 times I had true, independent, one or two truck operators.  I had a Focus come in from Florida on the back of a dually pickup with a 2 car trailer.  I had a long chat with the guy.  He hauls local loads of auction cars delivered to dealers all inside Ohio.  He had gone to Fl with the family for vacation.  Wife and kids flew, he drove down two car.  On the return he was bringing back a rust free purchase for his wife and my Focus.  He commented that the 3  cars (2 down and 1 up) paid for more than all the hotel expense and flights for the family.

The Infiniti came in from a company name Top One Auto Transportation from Colorado but I can not find them in a Google search.  Of course that was 3 years ago.

Additional chatter and advice I wrote in another thread.
