Cars you despised for so long then gave in

I've been trying to think of an example but I really can't.  

I mean I greatly prefer RWD but I don't despise FWD or AWD. 

I greatly prefer cars with two doors and they're always better than cars with more than two but I don't hate the cars with more.  

I like sport cars, muscle cars, grand touring cars, luxury cars, basic cheap transportation cars,  SUVs, trucks and vans.

There are cars I like from every country that produces cars.  Although I do prefer American and European over Asian cars.  

The only thing I really despise is the Ford motor company.  There has never been,  nor will there ever be a FoMoCo product that will change my opinion. However I do like lincoln,  but it turns my stomach to see all those little Ford logos under the hood. 

Mavericks, Pintos, Samurais. Probably more.

I used to not be a super fan of Japanese cars except 60-80s landcruisers, Suzuki samurais, Datsun sports roadster and 240z. Now I like miatas as well. In the 80s I loved Volkswagens, air cooled and Rabbits. I had a bunch of Rabbits, a couple type 1s and a van ( type 2) . The van really turned me off vw, it was super unreliable, expensive for parts, and surprisingly bad on fuel for highway driving.  I loved the van till it just got too irritating. I got a 3/4 ton 4wd surburban with big bias ply 35" tires ( big in those days). It didn't use 50% more fuel than the vw van, could tow stuff reasonably, and never broke down leaving me on the side of the road in 5 years ( I paid less for it as well) . 

My main two are  camrys and hondas for performance. I always hated camrys, I knew they were just appliances and I hated them for that, but now i realize that there is something to an appliance that starts and runs comfartable everyday and just blends in to the surroundings. I got drug by a K swapped hatch a while back and it made me realize they can be quick.

Really when I got into my 30s I started appreciating all cars for what they are, and there isnt much I dont like anymore except for brodozers and cowboy cadillacs, which I will always hate

I actually like the way the 996.2 cars look and find the interiors (with the exception of the light grey ones) to be nice places to be that hold up fairly well.  I have a turbo, so avoided all the engine maladies but it seems that for street use they're fine.  I've only seen them blow up on track, which admittedly is a huge failing for a company like Porsche.

I guess the car I was most disappointed in was my 2008 Lexus GX470.  Ran like a typical toyota until 112k miles.  Then everything wore out over the next year and 15k miles.  I was constantly having to fix that thing and also replace parts that I'd never had to replace before on my German cars with more mileage.  Most of my German cars were arguably MORE reliable comparatively, over higher mileages.

Cars I despise, miata's.  Yeah.  They're small.  They're slow.  I don't fit in them, like at all.  Never been a huge fan of a convertible.  Will never, ever pass a 2" broomstick rule in one without installing a drop floor because I don't fit in them.  Will never bother to do that level of effort because they're slow.

Keep us posted on how the GTI works out for you. I'm very interested as I might be coming full circle on VW. 

I've gone from loving 80s VWs in my younger days, to hating them and anything German after owning a few BMWs, back to being curious about them, as of like, this month. A friend is really into VWs and was singing the praises on f the Mk7. I'm still skeptical.

I have despised Camrys (till I owned one a realized it's nice to have a car that always works), Prius (they just make so much sense) to Crown Vic's and other big cruisers (I'm getting older and like comfort).

I used to despise BRZ/GR86/FRS, because of the "my world is flat" people or that "boxer rumble" people. However I'm really considering a new GR86/BRZ as it seems to be so much more appealing for weekend track warrior and a livable daily.

Well yeah, the new one is actually good.

Like many here: anything German, but because of their bad reps.  Yet, a part of me wants to trade 1 of my DDs for a VW convertible...New Beetle, or even a cabriolet.

Honestly I was REALLY wanting one before the GTI, but the useable back seats, nice interior, and power pushed me to give the German stuff a shot. 

Will probably own one in the future. 

The GTI Is the only thing I like in VWs  lineup now that they killed the Golf Wagon, All Track and the regular Golf. However, I dig the last gen Beetle Coupes and wouldn't kick one out of the garage/driveway.

I was not a fan of Subarus... used to mock the '94 Legacy wagon my wife had when we met by doing a crotchety old man voice and saying "don't rush me, I'm trying my best" as we negotiated corners, attempted to merge, etc. The coarseness of the boxer engines and lack of the refinement and high RPM zing I was used to even in my pre v-tech Hondas bothered me. I was eventually won over by AWD, the ease of access for repairs* (sparkplugs excepted), the solid crash test ratings,  less grabby clutches than the Hondas, and even the coarseness that used to bother me- I like that I can feel and hear the engine. The ergonomics and level of power assist on brakes/steering fit me perfectly. I like that it's at least a little mechanically different in a sea of inline 4s and V6es. There are definitely better cars out there, a lot of the digs on Subarus are valid to one extent or another, but they work for me. Not so sure about the newer models, the word on the street is that they're kind of numb and Toyotafied, I'd probably go with Mazda if buying new. 

Coming back to my own thread for the other new car in the driveway... A 2022 Kia Niro EV. 

Never thought I'd be buying a Kia 10 years ago. Never thought I'd be getting an EV any time soon either. It made sense with lease incentives, the offer we got from CarMax for my wife's 2019 Escape, and her commute (or lack thereof) + short trips around town only.

REALLY enjoying the nice ride, radar cruise, near instant heat, and ~$200/mo savings between Escape payment/fuel/maintenance. 

Also never thought I'd lease anything. Makes sense on this though, $16k for all lease costs including tax/title/tags after the $11,700 worth of lease cash incentives, $23k residual to buy it out at the end, with an original MSRP of $45,980.

Facelift Chargers. Never liked the original one. 4 door and Charger should not be in the same sentence. Even the K car Charger in the 80s was a coupe. The original had the pig nose grille.

I've been jonesing for a post 15 one. Aggressive looking front and rear, even those its the same basic car.

It's a weird time! I'm softening toward the Korean cars, hard to believe I'd say that.

Nah, I'm fresh out of 2s. Blueboy was sold about 1 week before Tot got put into a wall at Mid Ohio. 

Im not opposed to another, but no room/need for one currently. May buy another eventually but no room/time/need presently.

This was all before I was 30, and that bereft perspective has been covered already, but here's my story: as a kid in the Great Plains Midwest in the 80s all we knew were RWD V8s. Asian cars were garbage tin cans. German cars were cool but didn't know much about them. Then in the late 90s my brother moved back from the coast driving a 3rd gen Accord. I saw how poorly he treated his but it just kept working, and interior quality seemed great. so when I didn't have much cash and needed a car I bought one, too. I drove it hard and discovered that the replacement for displacement was lightness. Then I bought another and another. Learned how to work on cars rebuilding one that had a bad title due to an odd circumstance. That last part was a life changer, of course.

And also Minivans. Typical caricatured dislike of them until I drove one for a job. Drives like a car AND is spacious!? SIGN ME UP!

Last one -and doesn't really fit the criteria, but still- was a FWD Cad with a small V8. It was part of a trade + cash for a car I sold. It brought balance to my life. I'd forgotten how GOOD torque feels.
