I can just throw this in the engine compartment and it will be fine, right?

No, you need to actually pull the CAS and replace the existing o-ring.  Simply placing it in the engine bay won't help your problem.

cheeky

Yep, you can replace it perfectly fine without pulling the valve cover or anything like that.

When you pull the CAS off, take note of how the fins are oriented and try to put them back there when reattaching. Lining the CAS up to the camshaft is the hardest part of the job.

Really want to stress this. I just did this last week and it took me about 2hrs to get it back in because I didn't take note. It's just a really tight space you can't see and it's berkleying annoying

Honestly, taking the minute to remove the valve cover and rear cam cap is totally worth it. Chances are your valve cover gasket is leaking by this point anyhow.

Mark the rotation of the CAS before you pull it so your ignition timing doesn't change much.

I mean, I guess it's possible to do the CAS without pulling the valve cover, but pulling the valve cover is so easy that I'll do that.  It makes getting fingers on the CAS bolts easier, too.

Interesting.

Looks like I will be ordering a valve cover gasket.

And that means I will HAVE to clean and possibly paint the valve cover.  Thanks guys.

You're not going to paint the valve cover without painting the intake manifold as well, are you?

;)

^ I agree with Keith, way easier to just pull the valve cover. I would also get a timing light because you'll probably need to reset timing after you're done, and it's an opportunity to get the car to run a little better.
