Would something like this be allowed at the challenge or does it go against the rule about having all the body panels?

I would allow it as well.

I was kind of looking for a more official yes.

If enough people say yes does that make it a yes?

Um, technically no, as the rules state that the all major body panels must be on the car. It does, however, say that body panels can be modified. That gives you a fair amount of leeway.

yeah, like use bits of the original hood and fenders to build a short bed or patch the floorpan

so, that would be considered panel modifications to provide "clearance"?

Normally I would say "Major body panels" but Andy's bug had no fenders. Precident?

the rules for 2008 said that body panels must be present...they were present, on Andy's trailer. They now say, "present on the car" for 2009.

is the Nelson Family bug less cool with fenders installed? I envision "cycle" fenders on the front that attach to and steer with the knuckles, and some sort of baja-style madness on the rear.

and it gives more sheetmetal to cover with flames!

There should be an exception on the sheet metal for anything that shows up in American Grafitti without them. Just saying fenders aren't required everywhere, and a highboy just looks wrong with them and a hood.

Man I gotta bone up on my interpretation skills.

Yea, because the car had a theme going, we weren't really that concerned.

remember, this is a fun editorial event, not sanctioned club racing.

use the fenders to patch the floor pans, or other part that need extra sheet metal, they will still be on the car..

Hmm.....

So, it's all in the interpretation. My $2008 car is half finished for $2009 so this idea wouldn't happen until $2010.

If somebody does it for $2009 does it mean that the rules would be adjusted for $2010?

Could be. That's racing.

No, it's all about making cool cars for cheap and trying to create a ruleset that encourages creativity.

I could spell it all out and say that fenders may be modified, flared or cut but if they are replaced entirely than the fender must cover the full width of the tire.

I'd rather not be that picky about it and see what happens.

Wasn't trying to annoy you, Per. My apologies.

I was simply pointing out that the fate of any specialty built car for any class or given set of rules that takes an extended period of time runs the risk of facing the dilema that the rules could change (witness the Berzerkely, and bike motors).

Since the Challenge rules have been tweaked virtually every year, then the same thing could potentially happen to Challengers.
