Foxbody. Im partial too most of them but for ultimate scare factor go with early t bird or a fairmont/zephyr. Everyone expects mustangs too be loud.

Bonus points for wagon just because wagon.

Hell GTO's are getting under that umbrella. They are heavy and you can't fit much tire under them, but the skinny tires and long wheelbase make them super easy to slide around, and they sound with awesome with some Flowmasters.

But I vote 4th gen Camaro.

Cheap and hoonable? 70s or 80s midsized rwd 4door (cheaper than a comparable 2 door with the same potential). Stuff in the best v-8 you can build/buy.

Underrated??? Never could the fox mustang ever be underrated. It's the first car ever recommended for anything.

Wanna go drag racing? Hey, fox mustangs do that pretty good just fix the chassis.

Wanna go autocrossing? Hey, fox mustangs do that pretty good just fix the chassis.

Wanna go drifting? Hey, fox mustangs do that pretty good just fix the chassis.

Wanna do a track day? Hey, fox mustangs do that pretty good just fix the chassis.

Wanna run over crowds of people at a cars and coffee event? Hey, fox mustangs do that pretty good.

Most underrated my ass.

Do minivans have enough obnoxious and ugly to qualify? They gotta trump Mustangs and most others on these aspects alone? If so how about a first or maybe even second gen Mopar mini? Most can be had for near pocket change and are pretty light compared to the later ones. I've seen a few bodies bolted to 4x4 truck frames which shows a body swap can be done. Find a cheap small 2wd pick-up frame, add a healthy v8, merge it all GRM style and there ya go.

Plus if you ever need to carry more than one passenger or haul some tools, gear, etc, you actually have the room to do so.

Chevy or GMC short be stepside pickups are a good starting point, although they are starting to creep up in price.

Plenty of option for fitting engines, trans, tires, and exhaust. Not to mention good ground clearance and steel bumpers for hooning sessions that go off road unexpectedly.

Bonus points for keeping the period look:

Oh, yep, read some misinformation somewhere. But with a 500 Caddy being smaller and lighter than a BBC, I'm sure it'd fit well in there.

Actually the Seville 472/500 swap ain't easy. I only know of one successful one. Easier to go the Olds route and build the biggest one you can afford.

Hmmmmm. Lots of Hoonstang recommendations followed by a link to *pages* of people getting run over by Hoonstangs. They're not *exactly* known to be handling machines out of the box.. now are they?

Temper that with lack of skill, for the most part, in the thread I linked. GRMers typically aren't those drivers.

As someone who started drag racing them 11 years ago i want to know what the chassis fix is? Unless your that hung up on subframe connectors and adjustable control arms?

There popular in the drag racing world because there light and the suspension works.

Yes. Sub frame connectors or cages become mandatory when you start making decent power or they'll twist themselves apart.

They have weak sauce chassis.

It's not opinion.
