What are you towing?
V10 excursions are cheap, powerful, and reliable!
Pete you should buy my 1996 F250 that I have posted in the Open Classifieds. It's a little more money ,but you'll know for a fact it's solid.
Sorry, shameless plug I guess. but it's a good truck and I'd like to see it go to a good home.
frenchyd said:In reply to Chris_V :twenty years no accidents no damage to truck
suspect it's plenty safe. If you don't know what you're doing then a 2 ton may not be safe
Frenchy, you can be pretty condescending with your advice. Not sure its on purpose or not.
So far in my stalking these it seems like any SUV is about 2-3k less than the same year/mileage truck and also a lot less likely to be beat up.
A lot more diesels with the Fords, but the gasser GM's seem more reliable/more moddable
I've seen sub 3k driver 3/4ton burbans even with the 8.1
I am coming around on the half ton options due to availability/cost/ and more daily drivable gas mpg
In reply to yupididit :sorry I came across that way. I promise that was not my intent. I'm trying for brevity since I'm too long winded.
In reply to Jaynen :I think the reason for SUVs being cheaper than a similar truck is due to Mom. Not trying to be a male chauvinist pig but most women with other interests to concern themselves about prefer new to used and once it starts to look a little beat up are anxious to replace thus driving down the price.
Men with work and job concerns value utility more than appearance and will overpay for a work truck
In reply to ultraclyde :
I would love to have your truck! Unfortunately it's really stretching the budget, especially since it needs the steering box & will need tires somewhat soon.
In reply to frenchyd :
The main reason I want an HD tow rig is so I don't have to worry about destroying transmissions(hello, 700r4) and can tow long-distance in OD.

I would agree, also because trucks have a much longer "usable service life" where people turn them into lawncare rigs/painters trucks/contractor trucks etc until they are pretty much entirely used up. Peoples kids growup/they want better gas mileage/mom just wants something new with SUVs

This vehicle will be a multi-part answer to several needs.
1.) The short-term use is for moving the rest of our crap from IL to MS. A UHaul will set us back about $1800 to do it. I was already planning on buying a cheap($1500-$2000) tow vehicle for #2, 3 & 4 below, so this allows me to stretch my budget a bit more. We need to get our place cleaned out by spring(hopefully, if the sale goes through), so I do have a bit of time to shop around.
2.) Towing the Vette to events. While I hope to trust it enough for short highway trips, I definitely prefer towing to events - especially a 32-year old car. I've done plenty of events with/without a tow rig, and just find it easier and more enjoyable to have my own trackside support.
3.) Hurricane evacuation. Our current T&C does a good job of providing both people & stuff hauling, as well as light towing, but SWMBO hates it and wants to go back to something smaller. However, we have a small zoo: 2 geriatric cats(possibly adding a 3rd), a rabbit, and 2-pairs of sugar gliders. So we need the ability to load up our stuff, their stuff, and cages for the gliders - which are each 5'x3'x18". The pets can ride in a smaller car for several hours just fine, but we need something enclosed to haul the big cages in - like a van, SUV, or truck w/topper.
4.) General Home Depot/dump/whatever general utility that you wouldn't subject a "nice" vehicle to.
If it's any consolaton at least suburbans are slightly cheaper than comparable condition tahoes. A 1/2 ton 'burb with tow package out to serve your needs so long as you're not dragging a c4 over the Rockies 6 times a year.
Now we get to the trailer debate.
V10 Ram with four doors? Did they make those?
This beautiful monstrosity I found on Craigslist earlier? https://baltimore.craigslist.org/cto/d/custom-van/6365147227.html No, it's mine.
Yeah burbans do seem cheaper in general, and honestly 2500 6.0's are not really at a premium, 8.1s are just rare but not necessarily cost a lot more.
I spent just a bit more recently on my '04 Suburban quadrasteer 6.0 but (annoyingly) I've seen some 3/4 ton GMT 800 Suburbans for sale lately around the $3,000 mark. Hard to go wrong with them, and the 4L80 just gives me a warmer fuzzier feeling than the 4L60 in my '99 (which technically never gave me problems, just didn't fill me with confidence either).
A bit late, and the discussion has moved past, but the '97-'03 Expeditions were only rated for 4000lbs towing. Yeah, I have one. Nice truck, but not rated for towing heavy.
I found a 2500 Suburban that's sub-Challenged priced. I'm going to call on it tomorrow for details. Not sure it's the one for me, but at this price it's worth asking about.

That didn't sound right to me so I looked it up. Depending on options, they could tow up to 7900 lbs. Source.
For a data point.....I just sold my 97 3/4t, 4x4 suburban LT for 3300. It had 230k miles, a rebuilt trans, good tires, etc, etc. It was a good towing truck with the vortec 454. I had bought it thinking I might use it and sell my 02 Duramax dually, of course instead I just caved and bought a newer duramax dually.
In reply to Tom_Spangler :
I didn't look as hard as you did. I went as far as "expedition towing capacity" and got the 4000 lb number, without exploring further, into hitch type. Thanks, for finding that.
That brochure is from a local dealer, btw. Lol
Relative to the diesels, yes, but IMO all Excursions are overpriced for what they are.
Really? You will get a better Excursion than F250 for the same money by far. I think a ~$3-4k v10 Excursion is a value and a unique combination of attributes youd be hard pressed to replicate in any other vehicle.
V10 Ram with four doors? Did they make those?
No, but if they did they would probably be trading for decent money right now. 94-01 3/4 and 1ton Rams in good shape already cost more than the decent v10 Excursions i was just talking about.
In reply to Vigo :
They're about the same or a little less around here. If it's not a cummins it's not worth E36 M3 apparently.
Not that I'm going to complain about that because I miss my 2500 Ram every once in a while. I ever get a bug up my ass about another one I'd prefer they stay low.
Actually looking on CL some dealers are smoking a lot of crack. 17 year old V10 excursion with 200k for 10 large? U wot
The only thing I have heard about the V10s I think is they need to be revved out a bit which is not everyones's favorite type of motor for towing? I have heard that excursion vs suburban that excursions have second row captains seating which makes it easier for people to go between them to the rear bench.
I have not looked into the excursions much beyond knowing people try to sell the diesel ones for waaay too much money
I guess I'd have to go with the GM if you're talking Gas engines.
When it comes to the modular Ford engines vs. the LS generation of GM engines, I like the GM. I can't point to anything specific, but the general feel I get from my customers (auto repair shops) would keep me in that camp.
I don't know if/when ford went away from the twin i-beam front suspension setup. I just never could get fully behind that concept (and I've a truck with it). It's not bad...just weird.
