I've been doing software professionally since the late 80's focusing on embedded systems, custom hardware interfacing, driver writing and the like.  While it is totally possible to have accurate software timers without an OS, I have found that most OSes will have occasional huge latency spikes.

I don't have any experience with the underlying system rusEFI uses and with software, everything is broken until proven otherwise.  It's great if it's working well, but I still don't trust software timers for criitical pulse generation.
