Yesterday I swapped diffs in the Datsun and I noticed an issues.

I am using the 1200 bolts on a Datsun roadsters diff. With the lock washers on I don't get full engagement; I am only engaging 5mm of the 6mm depth of the nut.

Note it has been assembled this way for the past decade.

I much prefer to have a couple of threads protruding, so I ditched the lock washers and used loctite instead. I figured that would be much better.

Anyone see any issues with this?

1.5x OD is still the target for fastener thread engagement, correct?

I don't think conventional lock washers do much (anything?) for a properly tightened fastener. Their "spring" has long since hit coil bind by the time it's tight.

So I think the Loctite is much more effective anyway. What I don't know is when having *any* washer there is important.

I also believe it's understood that only the first few threads carry any load, but incomplete engagement would still make me exceedingly unhappy.

If I weren't on my phone I'd try to find one of GRM's "everything fastener" articles to see if it's covered.

Doubt it.  What is preferred inside the engine for critical fasteners?  Not a lock washer.  Mark the nut with paint and check after the first few sessions to eliminate any concerns.
