I thought about the minivan but this thing will do some serious mileage and for that I wanted a four cylinder. Most of the minivans are v6 and mid twenties for mpg tops. The HHR and the Ford Transit are both four cylinders that should get close to 30 even loaded with gear. One attraction of the HHR is that is fully loaded and a pretty nice place to spend a 10 hour work day. That should help with keeping the crew happy.

I don't have nearly the same level of hatred for the HHR as I do the PT Cruiser and it's not nearly as effeminate as one of those either. If it's big enough to suit your purpose and it gets you the kind of gas mileage you are hoping for go for it.

Locally, the HHR seems to be the choice of pest control and medical transport. Kinda small for trades.
