Do the basic maintenance on it, and on that car it includes the timing belt, and it's decent basic transportation that beats walking.

Exactly, it's a great basic car, it goes pretty good, has plenty of space and is cheap. They seem to have a good factory warranty on powertrain. If all you have to worry about is a timing chain going slightly more often than another car then I don't think it's that bad considering the price.

I test drove one for giggles when I was looking for a car in Dec. While not seriously considing it I was surprised with the power. I guess my expectation was so low that when it showed better that sucking acceleration I was impressed. If buying used make sure it has AC. All came with no AC through 07 IIRC and was a dealer add on if you wanted to pay $1200 extra for it. Most were sold without AC.
