Does anyone else think this car may be kinda awesome? 1.4ltr turbo and six speed manual.
Awesome? No, but it's a HUGE improvement over the Aveo.
Fiesta 2420-2600 lbs
Fit 2489-2615 lbs
Mazda2 2300-2350 lbs
VW Golf 2.5 2968-3023 lbs

About 300lbs lighter. But the 2800lbs was an estimate by C&D so who knows what the Sonic actually weighs.

Airbags weigh about 5 lbs each x 10 = 50 lbs. Doesn't explain a 250 lb weight difference. Especially since the Fit has 6 of them.

Plus power locks, keyless entry, power windows. Plus turbo bits and 2" wider.
just came across this with more details about the Sonic

Autoblog said: GM hasn't released final U.S. curb weight information on the Sonic, but the hatch felt significantly lighter on its feet than its Ford counterpart. In Europe, an equivalent Sonic (still known as the Aveo in those parts) tips the scales at between 2,575 and 2,700 pounds, while both the Fiesta and the Fit weigh in at a whisker over 2,500 lbs.
the AB article refreshed my memory on the power output. 138 hp for both engines (1.8, 1.4T), more torque from the 1.4 turbo, but also sounds like there may be some turbo lag.
The new Accent and Rio's direct injected 1.6 are around that 140hp mark now too and around 2500-2600 lbs. Veloster shares this motor and weighs about the same too.
I have the 1.8 in my Astra. That motor isn't anything to write home about. Curb weight for our Astra is around 2800 pounds. At least with a turbo, you can much more easily gain power by swapping parts.
The pics in the linked Autoblog make it look a lot like an Aveo. Not a fan of the looks of this one compared to the Fiesta, the Mazda 2, or pretty much any other small econobox. I call this one a swing and a miss.
I've always said, and still say that airbags should be an option.
Of all the trees to bark up...
Id rather stick to something vaguely defensible like "you should be able to temporarily disable stability control, brake override, brake assist, traction control, and possibly abs without voiding your warranty or setting a crippling trouble code."
But does the 1.4T weigh in significantly lighter which would make it a better handling car and a better engine donor for a middie locost?

I mean to me they all look like jelly beans. I would certainly not mind trying the Sonic, 500, M2 and Fiesta out.
I forgot about the 500. I do not like the looks of that one either. It looks too cartoonish to me. I think my brother had a Penny Racer back in the day that looked like those.
I wouldn't make the claim that the Fiesta or the Mazda 2 are really good looking cars. I just like them both way more than the Sonic. I find the styling of this one to be atrocious.
