Today my dad announced that he is buying a m550i to replace his SS.  I like the SS quite a bit. All I know about the bmw is that it has a twin turbo v 8 and an automatic transmission.

My initial impulse is to talk dad out of this . Please tell me why I'm wrong.

I just had breakfast with dad at 10:00 we're going to pick this car up he's not trading the SS it will be for sale I don't know anything else other than it has,000 MI has a 6-speed and it looks like brand new and has been very meticulously maintained I would advise on its status as soon as I know. I think he's probably making a mistake

Good to see you back! I also would consider that a mistake but sometimes you just gotta scratch that itch.

The n63 v8's have lots of issues, the latter versions have improved some.  They can be a pain to work on & the hot v with turbos cooks all the plastic/rubber

So there's an M6 SS for sale, you say?

I'm partial to the SS. Mine is a '15. But the M550 is a different kettle. Even with how refined the aussie's made the SS, the BMW is going to be a nicer car. Some guys just want change.

Even though replacing the SS with the 550 doesn't seem like a good idea to many of us, that's really not the critical part.

I've reached a point in life where my input is if the BMW will make him happy, and not put him at risk financially (beyond modern BMW cost of ownership), then he should do it.

After talking with Dad this morning I've decided to just shut up and let him do as he wishes. The man is 85 years old and maybe he just wants an automatic for a change but just won't say it. The SS has 82,853 miles on it has two sets of Wheels summer tires and winter tires and is in perfect condition he put all new shocks on it last summer. The BMW it turns out one of his buddies has one and my dad drove it one weekend last summer and he's been looking at them on and off since then. The one he's buying has 27,000 miles on it and it's a certified pre-owned from a BMW dealership. I'm in the SS right now getting a haircut and taking care of a couple things well dad is at his office getting a check and all the paperwork in order and we're leaving about 10:30 to go pick it up. When the SS goes up for sale if it doesn't go to one of his buddies or my buddies local I'll make sure it's on here

I forgot to add that I'm really hoping when we get to the car dealership he hands me the key to the SS and says Merry Christma

I hope so too, my friend. That would be very cool.

Yikes.

The only thing I can offer is after having my '13 135i, a modern turbo BMW is something that would make me pretend to be Usain Bolt.

Props to your Dad for wheeling an LS3 / 6MT SS at 85 years young. I still want the Ranger you were driving when we did the Saab brakes at crowd's hangar.

I just had that ranger up north for 10 days. It's a really nice truck however the four wheel drive leave something to be desired. It won't go into four-wheel drive and it's got an automatic dashboard switch type selector I'm going to convert it to the old lever type transfer case if it becomes minetowing the truck uphill using my 97 Nissan. I pulled it uphill by myself as I was the only one there

Nobody seems to be lusting for a used 550.

As epic as that SS may be (I'd sure love to own one!) maybe he's just bored and wants something different.

My Dad bought "one last, brand new car" about five times. I hope the same or better for your father.
