For anyone here who has run Chump / Lemons what are you guys using for 5 gallon fuel jugs and what modifications have you done to them that are legal? Beside the jugs how much fuel do you end up bring and what do you store it in? We plan on doing an 8 hour race in a 280Z .

Ran across a GRM article on this very topic:

I had a Lemons judge get pissy with me for carrying a fuel jug through the tech area. When I told him it was empty, he got pissy with me about "fumes." Meanwhile, dozens of cars with full fuel tanks passed through the same area that morning.

Besides random officious pissiness, I don't recall any particular rules about the fuel jugs themselves. Just make sure you do any refueling in the designated areas. Those rules are quite clear.

I use the Jegs utility jugs with a big vent (3/8") plumbed from the top all the way to the bottom using PEX tubing. Put a fitting in the top the biggest it would take and used braided nylon reinforced tubing for the output. You have to enlarge the opening in your car's filler tube (knock out the unleaded restrictor.) It dumps 5 gallons in about 20 seconds. Never an issue with officials at Lemons.

Do not try to drill out the cap, it will not work. (it will crack and/or leak)

I can post pics and part numbers if you're seriously interested.

Are the Jegs jugs DOT certified? The Datsun is a 1976 and doesn’t have a restrictor so that shouldn’t be a problem.

What about fuel storage in the pit? Are you using a fuel caddy or 55 gallon drum with a hand crank pump?

I'd like to see a pic just because I'm having a hard time picturing the mods.

The Jegs jugs are probably not DOT certified since they do not have the CARB stuff on them. Here's the Jegs page on them:

http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS+Performance+Products/555/80211/10002/-1

and here's a pictoral step by step as to how I did it. Probably not much commentary needed.

One modification I would do is to put a valve on the vent tube. If you leave it open and fill the jug with fuel and then close a solid cap on it it will force fuel out the vent when the pressure changes in the jug. Ie, when you leave it sitting in the sun. Whoops. You can put a valve on the inlet and outlet if you'd like. Just make sure they don't add a restriction or you'll slow down fueling.

As far as bringing fuel in, it depends on the team. One team we had a 55 gallon drum and a flo-fast hand pump. Another we had several 25 gallon drums and hand poured them using funnels. Another team we just take the jugs to the gas station and fill them as needed. I like the last method the best if you have enough people on hand that losing a few to a gas trip isn't a problem. Plus you're less likely to end up with 20 or 50 gallons of gas left over at the end.

Oh, the cap modification is only unthreading the existing plug and threading in a 3/4" MIP to 1" barbed tubing fitting. Use thread sealant on the threads. Then you put a 1" ID (inside diameter) braided nylon tube on the barb. I usually make them about 12" - 18" long, long enough to put the tube into the filler then tip the jug up to start the pour.

Pay attention when fueling, pause even one second before stopping flowing into a full tank and you have a quarter gallon mess of gas on your hands. and the car. and the ground...

We've used the Scribner jugs, they look just like the JEGS. Our car has a whopping 12 gallon tank and uses maybe 7 gallons per stint so we typically take just two jugs to refueling. Since we aren't trying to dump 20 gallons, we have not modified any of ours, the thinking is if we spray fuel everywhere from trying to jam it in fast the cleanup time would quickly offset any time we might possibly save with quick dump cans.

I've enjoyed handling dculberson's jugs at several lemons races.

They really work, better than similar ones we made. One car with a stock fuel system can take the fuel as fast as it can flow, 15 gallons in a minute. The car with the fuel cell takes it a bit slower as it works through the foam unless you hold it up high. Huge difference from the I modified jugs.
