Finally got my DSM running after the car has sat for nearly a year in my possession. I’m not sure how long the PO let it sit. I changed a lot of parts including the valve stem seals, turbo, and head gasket so I’m pretty paranoid something else is wrong.

I noticed today on start up that it smokes a bit at first and then after it idles (car is still on jack stands) that it smokes white under load. It also is dropping a decent amount of water out of the exhaust after it idles and starts to smoke.

Its been cold here and the tank is pretty full.

Possible that the smoke is condensation? Compression is good. Oil is clean. Could be the new used turbo I suppose.

Since you replaced the head gasket and valve seals I think you can assume that the water is just the result of combustion. Has it been humid lately?

The rings may be sticking some as well from sitting. They should free up as the engine is driven and oil is circulated. Adding some oil to the fuel like Marvel Mystery oil or two cycle oil won't hurt as well as some fuel system cleaner.

"car is still on jack stands" vs "under load"... Do you just mean revving it in neutral? Have you let it run to full warm? It'll take a while to blow all the moisture out of the exhaust system, especially just sitting in place. You're not moving anything like as much air/heat revving it to a few thousand RPM as you would be actually moving the car.

Did you know that burning a gallon of gasoline produces more than a gallon of water?

And, if you bought it with a blown head gasket, it will take a pretty good drive to get the coolant out of the muffler.

In reply to Ransom :

Yes neutral reving. Not actually under load.

Noted. Car had a bad bad head gasket when I bought it. Put another engine in that had a leaking head gasket from one of the piling ports.

Car ia running great now but I guess I expected it to run perfect. Didn’t think about how much sludge went through the exhaust.

Funny I’m facing the exact same issue with my mr2. Sitting for years but motor swapped from a 2003 that was only sitting a few months and it’s got condensation out the wazoo coming from the exhaust. It remains to be seen if it’s normal. I sure hope so as is hate to have to pull this motor again.

I had this happen in a Firebird I resurrected for an engine swap.  No bad head gasket as far as I know, but it still took a few times of it running in my driveway to clear the condensation in the exhaust.

My 1st gen neon was purchased with a blown head gasket and sat for a long time. Took almost a thousand miles to clear out all the coolant out of the exhaust.
