2001 X5 with a 3.0 I6. Has about 120k miles.

The obvious parts: radiator, water pump, thermostat and housing, upper and lower hoses. What else should be added to the shopping list? The serpentine belt tensioner and idler pulley we're just replaced a few months ago.

you will need the expansion tank as well. I will look through the reciepts from when i did my X5 a couple of years ago.

if you look on ECS tuning website the have a cooling system overhaul kit. The level 3 should have a list of everything you need.

I'd recommend the fan clutch as well. Inspect the fan blades and replace if necessary. I also hate the stupid plastic bleed screws - brass ones with o-rings are available.

Turner has a kit as well where you can throw in what you need.

Tool tip for those plastic BMW drain and bleed plugs-- the best thing I've found that fits is a penny held in a pair of Vise-Grips.

It's a good tip for removing them, but my real complaint is that they get just as brittle as all the other plastic in the system and can fail of their own accord.

I just started this job today, if anyone cares, I strongly recommend adding the expansion tank mounting plate to the parts list. It's got a whole bunch of fittings, and a thermostat looking thing that came out broken. Its also the only confirmed leak on this particular X5.

If you want to keep the X5 for a long time, you may want to use this.

It's pricey at around $40 a gallon, so don't use it if you may sell the SUV in a couple of years.

What does that have to do with the longevity of the cooling system? I though that it was age and heat cycles that wears out plastic cooling systems.

If the X5 overheats like the E36 and E46, it's not the worst idea in the world.
