I was actually just thinking this. Almost exactly. I like the looks of the jag sedans, and I think a supremely fast executive car for cheap would be AWESOME.
Start with something like this: http://southbend.craigslist.org/cto/5510895883.html
Other fun jags that turned up:
94 XJS v12 - $2100
99 XK8 convertible - $5k
03 S-Type - $1500
99 XJR - $4200

that be a Bob Costas magnet if finished properly
I have no money but I know that at some point the supply of Jag V12's will dry up just like Surplus Mausers and I will kick my own ass black and blue for not having bought one.
Just a few questions,do these cars like to rust out in any one location or just look everywhere, and do you need any special tool's to repair this car? Found this today just a few miles from work. Not good.

This is an exercise in sadomasochism that I participate in every few months. Lemme just leave this right here...

Yes that sounds delicious

Fixed.
Come on guy's could it really be that bad Didn't someone here sell off a good daily driver for a Bi-turbo?
Basil Exposition, thank you for posting the link to the book "Experience in a Book" look's like I have some reading to do.
Penultimeta, and now one to check out on the ride home later this week.
Thanks, Paul B

I had a Series II XJ12L. It was in excellent shape mechanically and cosmetically, but anytime the weather got hottish, it would overheat. The radiator (breathing through that pretty, but tiny grill) handled coolant, PS fluid, trans fluid and A/C condenser all in one unit. IIRC, re and re on the rad was something like 8 hours. The engine must have been dropped from about 8 feet up in order to get it to fit into the tiny engine compartment, which didn't help at all. Even the battery had its own cooling fan.
A lovely car, but the level of detail engineering on the average Challenge car is far higher. The 12 was about half finished. I remember reading about a bigwig with American Jaguar talking about working in the US (LA I think), and he said that he spent all hot days in hiding from irate XJ12 owners. Apparently the boys in Coventry hadn't imagined the temperature would ever exceed 75F.
BTW, I agree completely about the need to own a V12. When I bought it, I'd owned 4's, 6's and 8's, so I had to complete the set with a 12.
According to a book I have, Coventry's method for testing the cooling system on the early E-types was to leave it to idle in a room that was temperature controlled to 75 degrees. If it didn't overheat within 45 minutes it was good to go! No testing of air flow through the radiator, no test drives through Arizona, nothing.
Let's assume I have an enormous, insatiable, burning desire to acquire a V12 Jag engine. Better to buy a $2000 clunker or try to find just the engine through salvage networks?
In reply to stroker:
My guess would be that it depends on what way you're going with it, and how much of the related components that you need.
I do CL searches for XJ12s/XJSs a few times a year, and rough but running ones can be found for under $2000. Some of them look quite nice in the pics.....sigh, I really regret not going to look at the $1800 XJ12 sedan, I'd bet big money that all that it needed was a fuel pump.
Back when MGuar was around, he mentioned that the pre 1980 V12s were better for performance mods due to a different combustion chamber design. He also said that a lot of the problems people have with them comes from taking too many short cuts in how they maintain them. Having owned other finicky cars, I can see how that could be true.

My problem is space. I have room for the engine but the process of parting out a complete car just isn't feasible...

Did you HAVE to do that!!!
I came across that Jag on York CL last night and it is the reason I am tired today. Don't need it, have nowhere to store it, would probably get pissed off and end up setting it on fire within a couple months of owning it (if the car failed to do so on its own, of course)...but I still REALLY want a V12 Jag. You people are all horrible
