I am curious to know if you could hack a nav screen in a car so that it would display a mini-cam (like a go-pro) in real time. Not that I would do it. Thoughts?

probably all depends on the car the screen is attached to. Some might be easier than others

+1 - for many cars there are tv-on-nav products that also include a video input so there is an off the self solution.

Found this info. It's only about a month old so it should still be good. Looks like you have to trick the GoPro into outputting a live feed, but the camera comes with the standard yellow RCA output, most aftermarket in-dash nav units have a place for an external input iehter for a rearview camera or for an aux -input.. so looks do-able.

Try it for us.

To get the GoPro to outpute a live feed...

1. Turn on your GoPro HD Hero with no card in it ----(GoPro LCD shows the current status)

  1. Plug in your Video cable ----(GoPro switches to Playback mode with a big red box that says NO CARD)

  2. After a few seconds, plug in the MiniUSB with 5V but no computer ----(GoPro shows a progress bar for "Processing" while it figures out there's no computer, then ----switches to Live Video Out with a big red box that says NO CARD)

  3. Insert your SD Card ----(GoPro finally lets you see the whole Live Video Out)

  4. Remove MiniUSB

I think it would be possible on some aftermarket nav systems, but the job would get A LOT more difficult if you were trying to attach it to an OEM nav system in most cases.

Get an iphone. Nav, video cam, dynolicious, etc, one screen.

Land Rovers and at least a few BMWs have lots of extra inputs on the back of the screens. A lot of the european brands offer in-dash TV/DVD in other markets so you have to hack the software and then its plug and play. I bet there are hacks for the go-pro too.

There is a kit (I think that it is called Lock Pick) for the GM stuff. With it, you can punch in nav destinations when moving, watch DVD’s when in drive and hook up more cameras to the nav screen. You can put one in the front to help the parking challenged or use one as a baby monitor (better then looking in the rearview mirror at a baby mirror to check if the kids head is still slumped over). You can also use it to turn the touch screen for the nav into the controller for a mp3 player.

Good info! My experience with OEM nav systems in limited to vehicles I have owner, my 07 RDX and my former GS430. This make me curious, maybe ill take the ACURA nav screen apart tomorrow.

Get a "back up camera". It's basically a bullet cam and a screen. Unlike an iPhone, they're physically separate so you can see the screen when the camera is attached to your bumper

You'll need to log in to post.
