I'm building custom air cleaners for my 65 Corvair 140HP Monza (4 carbs). I've got the velocity stacks made I just need 2 flat tops and bottoms with 2 holes machined out of 3/8" aluminum. It should be an easy job. Just cut the pattern and 2 holes for the carb throats. The only thing is I don't have the tools or skills to do it myself.
Anyone know of a shop that can do an easy job like this?
Can you draw me a picture?
Dan
Dan, I can PM you a picture if that would help.

Joey, If I were going to make it out of sheet metal I would give it a go. However I'm going for the billet look and for that I need them to be out of at least 3/8" aluminum. For that I need them water jet cut.

Oooooo can I put in a request too? I need a backing plate for the transom of my boat. Just a flat piece of aluminum with 2 holes.

makes sense. can't help with that.
You may want to hit up the "welding" department in the local votech. Ours has some other types of metal forming equipment. I don't think they have a water jet, but they do have some form of computerized cutter-dohickey (I suspect the cutting end is a plasma cutter.....never seen it in action) that is controlled by robotic arms. They've made some artistic looking tables by cutting patterns into steel plate and then welding them together at the edges......think cube shaped end tables, but each surface of the cube is a scene cut into plate metal.
If you need some aluminum cut, I'd look at your local Ace/True Value hardware store, some have metal cutting facilities.
They can at least source the material and rough cut it to your specs.
As for making the holes, a proper size hole saw and a steady hand will take care of the holes for the throats.
I use the local chicken plant manufacturer. They have a waterjet machine and can cut anything from thin aluminum sheet to 2" granite.
It takes longer but you can use a cheap hand held jigsaw (less than $25.00 at Sears, Harbor Freight, etc.) with a metal cutting blade. Drill a pilot hole for the blade, cut the circle, and then clean it up with a hand file.

Yeah, I though about going the bandsaw route and finishing up with a grinder. Just not real confident in my ability to make a clean cut and still look good (I'm anal retentive when it comes to details). If I continue to come up with nothing I may end up going this route.
I made this with a jig saw, a hole saw in a drill press and a router with a 1/2" round over bit:
It's 1/2" aluminum plate.
The tools all came from Harbor Freight or Home Depot.
Honestly, go do it. If you screw it up, do it again until you're satisfied.
What diameter?

Wow, that looks great! I'm getting inspired now!
