So I am currently in the slowly gathering parts phase of building the Civic for FSP. SCCA rules put the del Sol and my Civic on the same line so that means I can use either a D16Y8 (because it came in the '96 Del Sol) or a D16Z6. Currently my car has a SOHC VTEC ZC which won't be class legal and is burning oil a little. While I am keeping my eye out for a motor which one would be the better choice?
Y8, hands down. they make the same power on paper, but It has better intake ports, a better combustion chamber shape, a better intake manifold, and you will likely have more luck finding parts in a junkyard for it these days. Plus, as a newer motor, it's more likely that you'll have a motor with less mileage and fewer owners to have abused it.
Personally I prefer the Z6. Much better oil pump and double the oil ports on the crankshaft. Y8 is more prone to spinning bearings. The y8 likes way less timing due to head design, so you'll need a tune for sure if running obd1 electrics.
Intake manifold is swappable.
I've always been under the impression that the Z6 head has better ports but the y8 head has a better combustion chamber shape.
Y8 is better for lower rpm efficiency with its swirl ports vs z6 higher flowing tumble ports.
This is just me repeating what I've read so take it with a grain of salt. The best guys to ask (or search) would be at onecamonly.com
I will be using a Skunk2 intake manifold and probably Neptune to tune the car. I am planning on rebuilding whatever motor I decide on
Cant use b16? Gotta throw it out on a honda thread.
I say z6 btw.
D16z6 all day, but for what it's worth Jaxmadine pointed out the B16. DelSol Si has the B16, is it on the same line in the rule book?
Only the SOHC Del Sol is one the same line.
