I had a Powertrax Lock Right in my 94 XJ. It was a wheeling rig but I did drive it to work when the roads were crap. It is mainly easy to live with and didnt give the thing any weird handling characteristics......Id definitely recommend it.

There's always the option of finding a 4x4 with a factory locking rear (or front AND rear) locking diff. It's more common on newer rigs but isn't impossible on older ones.
ive lived with a couple XJs with a Powertrax no-slip lunchbox locker. it's basically a lock-rite but it has a slip feature that makes it quiet pretty smooth so you dont hear the clicking of a traditional locker. it's still a locker so tight turns accelerating youve got to be careful or youre going to spin the inside tire and sound like an ass when youre driving normally but that's any locker. but the first one got me through a winter alone after the front axle disconnect garbage failed and left me with 2wd. but theyre great offroad if you arent running huge tires and i dont mind it on road either. definitely recommended.
