So I went looking for a steel wheel and tire for my wife's Avalanche to replace one of the Nitto's that is about ready to pop at the local JY. Pull in and park. Go in find they don't have one, no big deal. Get back into my gas guzzler V6 Dakota and get ready to pull out, when I see the same Sebring vert I have seen so many times before. I stop get out and look at it thinking it is one of those smashed repairables he normally has out front. I walk around it and don't find any body damage and it's in pretty dang good shape. But then I open the hood, 2.7 V6, probably blown up, it is what they do best. Walk back inside, get the skinny, yeah it's blown up and stupid cheap. But then I get told about another Sebring vert he has. It is an '05 theft recovery needing exhaust, bags, mirrors and a taillight. Again, stupid cheap. Fixed up values are way more then what I would have in them. Too bad, I'm broke.
So, I hate you cheap Chryslers.

I passed on a cheap 2.7 vert about 2 years ago. Didnt want to mess with it. That theft recovery sounds like an easy flip, though. Im broke too, i really want to buy a $150 beetle i saw on CL on tuesday but i am THAT broke.
Just curious, what's the common mode of failure on the 2.7's?
I hear you Vigo, there's a E34 wagon that a guy is selling for the cost to get it out impound, I want one in a bad way.
In reply to doc_speeder:
Name it. There are many, but ones of the most common are a loss of oil pressure which allows the timing chain to slip and then it bangs all the valves, the E36 M3ty machining of and in the block, E36 M3 left in the block, and E36 M3ty materials to name some of them.

Well, the first thing would be it's a Chrysler 2.7

I think the dead 2.7 would be a good candidate for a 3.5 swap......
The 05 is a plain jane 2.4/auto vert. I was thinking would make a better DD then my Dakota, at least mileage wise....

Ithink you right about that, may be worth checking in to
Junkyards are like crackhouses...too many temptations. I could get that 944 on its feet again!
I test drove an '05 or '06 2.7 vert about 2 years ago when I was searching for a car for my wife. It was the top trim level car. Looked real nice. But man, every time the car hit a bump, the shudder in the chassis was unbelievable. I pulled into the dealer driveway at an angle, I can only imagine how much the chassis flexed. Felt like it was made from silly putty.

In an intrepid id say sure but im not aware of anyone swapping from 2.7 to 3.5 in the transverse-engined fwds yet. Maybe its been done and i just dont know, i dont pay attention to the newer stuff.
But yeh the 3.5 is a kickass motor. Not many people realize that because it only came in heavy cars with tall gearing for most of it's life.
In reply to Vigo:
It has been done. Reason I mentioned it. You have have to "dimple" the hood about 4" to make it fit. The biggest thing in the way of the swap is to make a new passenger side mount. Everything else is a bolt-up with some creative parts swapping.
Edit:
Pic of hood:
From this build thread: http://www.2gss.org/index.php?showtopic=15075
That looks horrible. Seriously bad.
I'd think a turbo setup on a 2.4 would be a nicer swap myself, although the 3.5 does have a lot going for it.
I'm sorry to hear your wife has an Avalanche.
That hood scoop has to be one of the ugliest things I've seen lately.
Were those Sebrings available with the 2.4 motor? Going that route would open up SRT4 and PT GT turbo motor swaps.
As for the cheap to find Chrysler products, last weekend I brought home a '96 2-door XJ. No motor/trans/transfer case. Has rusty floors (I've fixed worse). Was supposed to be a donor for my 2WD '87 Comanche. It's sitting next to the '95 5.2 Dak parts truck now. A 5.2L 2-door Cherokee is getting really tempting. Just would need to find a '96 5.2 donor of some sort in a yard for the OBDII bits...

Hope you don't need to go anywhere quickly.
Anything I've driven with that 2.4 is SLOW. Like, scary slow when trying to get into traffic.
I was at the JY yesterday for some saab parts.. amazing the amount of dead Chrysler products littering the place.

Guess you havent driven an srt-4. Noone here is suggesting leaving the 2.4 non-turbo..
It has been done. Reason I mentioned it.
Thanks for the info. Ive still got the 3.5 from my old intrepid that i was saving to mock up in a k-car with the 3.3 a604. Just never got around to it.
So someone finally has a 3.5/5spd... would be nice to see some track times to go with it.

I've driven slower... a brand new 1.8L/5spd Caliber.
They aren't that bad. I have driven many through the course of working on them.

i imagine its still better than a 2.0/cvt caliber. I had to floor it with 3 cars still left to pass in front of me if i wanted to turn out onto a street.
I haven't met a Caliber that I have liked.....
