I have fingered it's crack but never flocked it.
get the flock out of here!
No, seriously. It was only 16 when it started showing the crack - way too young for trashy flocking. At 21... it's got years and some wear on it. I can flock the E36 M3 out if it without regrets.
I laughed so much I cried.
Great Flocking thread. I'll keep this in mind for the next project (or if the Mustang's dash is as hardy as its door panels. Wait.....Flocked door panels..
Hey Per, did you get a sense of how abrasion resistant it would be? Like, if your elbow rubbed it a lot for instance?
Flockit, what's the average amount of materials needed for a typical car dashboard?
So is Per our flocking guide?
If so, can I ask him some flocking questions?
I think I found an alternative to the flocking for my dash and trim pieces, plasti dip. I stumbled across it after looking at bed liner paint. It peels off like a vinyl if you don't like the end result and is available for cheap at hardware stores.
I may even coat the outside of my t-tops with this stuff. Youtube shows people coating entire hoods and roofs and then peeling it right off with no damage or residue.

+1 for article on dash repair. I'm about to just order a cover for mine, but would like to avoid that if possible.
Step 0: Remove panel from vehicle
Step 1: FAIL
Home Depot had plenty of the canned plasti dip but none of the spray on version. Dashboard components are very reflective mid day too.
Thanks for the mention of the spray on plasti-dip. The M3 I just bought has the typical E46 peeling trim around the cup holders and shifter trim and this will solve the problem perfectly, and may just be exactly what BMW used in the first place.

I had the dumb patch of fake wood over the glovebox in my E36, and I painted the trim piece with black spray plasti-dip like 3 years ago. Still looks great! I also went over the chrome on the kidney grilles with it. It looks good, is easily reversible, and sure beats paying $40 for black aftermarket grilles.
Where are we all getting this spray on plasti-dip?

My local Ace Hardware carries it.
CarQuest, AutoValue, HF, Do-It Best, Ace to name a few...
Messy, gets everywhere, messy, can be sensitive to touch if not applied correctly, messy
Did I mention messy?
When I Tier 1ed for B we had flocking facility in our plant. We finally positive pressured the plant and negative pressured the flocking room just to stop the mess. It still got out.
So it makes a giant flocking mess?
I'm wanting to suede wrap my dash. Flock getting all messy, I do that enough.

I know this thread is kind of old but it was one of the things I read when I was getting ready to do my dash. I just finished flocking a dash I picked up for free for the ae86. It was pretty rough and had the usual severe cracking. After using several methods to fill the cracks I sanded everything smooth and applied the flocking process. I used the mini flocking kit from donjer. It turned out great you can't even tell the dash was ever cracked. As far as making a mess I laid down a trash bag under the dash in the garage to catch any glue I might drip and the excess flocking that didn't stay on the plastic was very easy to sweep up. I'll try to get a picture once I get it installed. All in all though I am super pleased with the results thanks to the grm community for tipping me on to this.
Does flocking come in different colors? Can I flock my burgundy dashboard in burgundy?

why suede when you can go crushed velvet?...
hmmm... current my dash is out... makes me want to do something like this
That flocking looks like trunk spatter paint, but I could be wrong.

It is a long story, but I did, in fact, flock the ex-girfriend of Cameron Diaz's fomer boyfriend.

Can one upholster a dashboard? I have the cracked e30 dash. I kind of want to fill the cracks and then suede the E36 M3 out of it. I'm just unsure how it would follow the contours of the dash. Some sharp corners on the e30 dash.

You sure can. But don't do it to save money. The quality ultrasuede that is correct for the job is about $80 a yard. I covered two dashboards for friends in the cheaper stuff meant for home use and it degraded in the sun after a couple years.
The two fiddly pats are the cubby area on the top right side and the stereo/hvac surround. Put seams on the inside corners of the cubby area to help prevent gathers in the cubby. You also need to tuck and fix the fabric to the back of the dash around the edges and not just the face. It is the tucking of the fabric that makes the stereo/hvac surround so fiddly.

Ojala, where can I find material with the appropriate stretch? I imagine suede is more expensive than the typical heavy cracked vinyl stuff that dashboards usually get.
This is something I will consider on my 2011 Fiesta.
The glare can get very annoying at times.

I was talking to my dad and he said it was ridiculous to put expensive ultrasuede on the dash of an old car. I tend to err on the side of making things too nice. He, on the other hand, is much more experienced than I am and he said to just use a 8 oz nu-suede or one of the other cheap knock offs. Shouldnt cost more than 6 or 7 bucks a yard from ebay or amazon and will last just fine. And at that price you can do the headliner, door cards, and probably everything else in the car. That and a few cans of 3m spray glue and you will be set.
