A local construction company quoted a friend $16K for improvements, billed her $32K and the improvements promptly failed ruining the new work.
Is this acceptable behavior to you guys?

Oh, yeah, I forgot that stupid trick salesmen pull when they take your car for an appraisal/test drive....."oops, we lost the keys". Seems to be much more common the closer it is to closing time. This happened to my little sister once, and she literally threw a fit. When they finally brought her old car back to her she discovered the emergency brakes were destroyed by some pinhead who (apparently?) wanted to test the brakes or the tranny/engine.

Saying "build me a house" without an estimate is one thing.
In the case you're giving, there was a quote for $16k that turned into a bill for $32k. I believe that is actually illegal.
Was the quote verbal or was it written on a piece of paper and signed?
The Romans wrote it over the gates to the city fer chrissakes.

I must be relatively lucky, all the times I've been in and dealt with most dealerships in my area (getting a feel for what's available in the area when it comes time to turn in the '02 Escort ZX-2 auto on something a bit sportier with a manual transmission, which will probably be around the first of the year) have been pleasurable experiences, with the noted exception of the used car dealership attached to a family owned chain of dealerships. evidently "I'm not buying today, just looking" or "we're not in a financial position to buy anything today" is heard as "push me to buy the damn car!" if the car is used. the local Mini dealership (Crown Mini of Richmond) is extremely nice to deal with, although being Mini, I'm not honestly all that surprised, as is the local Subaru and VW dealerships. the closest Mazda dealership is also nice to deal with, although one of the salesman does seem like he hasn't been in the game long enough to lose the tendency to take himself very seriously.
