can a 335d bmw mill fit under the hood of a miata? That'd give you 6 cylinders, turbo diesel, and possibly complete the trifecta required to completely piss off every bmw, miata, and mazda fanboi.

hahaha, I love it already!

I'd even argue that 300hp is about as high as one would go practically. V6 would be different thou. Also thinking about a 4 cylinder turbo diesel, depends on which one tickles my fancy at the time of the build. Already building the V8 NB, so thinking about what I would like to do to a NA.So... how much power are you actually wanting and how many cylinders do you want? Starting to get confused here.
I merely asked is Mazda actually made a decent motor that I don't know about because I couldn't find anything on the web. I said nothing of displacement, cylinders, fuel type, forced induction vs NA, or anything like that. lol, seems that's what this thread turned into. I was just looking for a cool motor to put into my next project.
That being said, this is a very insightful thread. And although the Miata doesn't need 300-400hp, that's what I'm going to put down. Is it useless? Well... yea.... duh, power to weight is unpractical without major modifications to just about everything else.
Now, I'm not a fan of the cookie cutter stuff, so 13b is out (and I don't like rotaries, although hp/$$ is way in its favor) and I'd like to go odd ball, which is why I'm leaning towards the V6. I was surprised to see that the KL actually had some potential, which made this thread worth it. Not to mention learning a lot about the other motors. I guess, yea, if I wanted to be practical with my goals I'd go with a Buick V6 (probably turn a L67 90*) and I'd make 400HP easy and be light but... well... this is grassroots...
So, in short, I was looking for something Mazda, something a little different, and would make more horsepower than I would know what to do with but wouldn't force me to have custom pistons made to do it.
Gotcha.
The KL is what the doctor ordered then.
Or the JE.
Here's a turbo KL miata on only 6psi. It's probably making around 250-270whp. Owner is shooting for 600whp area.

Now we're on the same page! lol, what's the JE? Must have missed it.

3.0 V6. Cast iron block, aluminum heads. Probably quite a bit stronger than the KL. Should have no problems hitting 400hp without anything more than maybe ARP head studs.
929/MPV motor. Came in SOHC and DOHC flavors.
JamesMcD on here knows of a transmission combo that should get you a manual trans to bolt to it.
It's on my bucket list of motors to boost the everliving E36 M3 out of. But i want mine in a box 929.
In reply to Swank Force One:
Wasn't that the motor in the 1989-ish 929S, which had a five speed option from the factory? I bet they sold literally a dozen or so of them in this country with that trans, so just find one and you're off to the races.
Swank Force One wrote: So it's like.... the exact opposite of an F2T, where you just throw a E36 M3load of fuel at it and ramp up the boost and let it all sort itself out.
....sort of. It's a fuel WHORE, but the HPFP will run out of huff well before anything else in the fuel system will. I don't know that the stock injectors have been maxed as of yet, and that includes the cars making 700+. It also likes to huff meth and nitrous. Go figure.

Yep, that's the one!
