Not that any of us would abuse a vice but here you go. 12 vises abused to destruction.
I was "glad" to see the old Prentiss was previously damaged, and therefore not as desirable. Destroying an antique like that would be a shame to say the least.
Interesting test and yes painful to watch if you have an appreciation for tools. I suspect in everyday shop usage the majority of those vises tested would not actually break. But I do believe the old adage "they don't make them like they used to" may apply here.
I like and collect old tools and can tell you from experience the current Wilton Machinist Vice is no where near the quality of a fifty year old Wilton Machinist that still commands several hundred dollars in the used market. That also applies to some of the other brand names like Yost, Prentist, Columbian, etc. I have a 60 to 70 year old Charles Parker ( shot gun manufacturer) I bought 20 years ago that weights over fifty pounds that still operates amazingly smooth with almost no slop. These old vises are still around if you look for them.
At first look I woulda bet this was from Project Farm but this guy is good.
Doubt I would ever punish my personal equipment like that but it's good to know the weak spots. Swivels and screws.
6" Wilton w/ swivel at work. I will break this, only a matter of time. Probably a hand-me-down from another shop anyhow. They never buy us good E36 M3.
Coulmbian at home shop, paid $275 back in '83. I don't abuse it and doubt I will ever break that one. Have shop press for that kinda work.
