Or are 5-door hatchbacks and things like the Kia Soul the closest we get? I've decided my Escort wagon is the perfect size/configuration for my needs but I can't think of any real modern equivalents.
Wait, VW still does a Jetta wagon. Is that it?
I'm asking out of pure curiosity. Not planning on buying a new car anytime soon.
I think there is still a jetta wagon, but the rest I know of are hatches like the focus , mazda 3, elantra gt....
The Impreza wagon isn't wagon shaped, but has about the same cargo volume as the Escort.
Doesn't bmw and mercedes still do wagons?

Audi has an A4-based Allroad. Ignore the tupperware on the side and it's a tall wagon. I think there's a 3-series wagon as well.
The Ford C-Max is the current Ford Escort (Focus) wagon but you are forced to pay the up-charge for the Hybrid system.

You forgot how the hatch area is full of batteries.
One of the nicest of the Hyundai line, in my opinion.
I forgot the posh Germans. I guess I don't think about BMWs when I'm thinking about Escorts.

Might be a bit larger but cts-v wagon, I mean 638 hp rwd + 6 speed seem like logical arguments to upsize...

Does Kia still do like the spectra wagon or whatever? Or the Rio 5?
There is a Kia Forte that is wagonish.
Subaru forester used to be kind of wagon-y

It is the forte 5 hatch and the rondo that is more wagonish. The Honda fit is the new small wagon, IMO. Nissan versa note too, I got one as a rental it for a ton of luggage. No guts though.

The Prius V actually has the most cargo space of any wagon today. My sister cross shopped against the CTS, Jetta, TSX wagons.
Yeah, I'm disappointed in the whole hatchback vs wagon thing. I like the sheer cargo volume that a true wagon holds, as opposed to a hatchback which basically just gives you a taller trunk. I blame the proliferation of unibody SUVs, which are basically just station wagons with lift kits and E36 M3ty gas mileage.
The Prius V and Jetta Sportwagen are the only two true wagons I can think of right now, and both of them are just stupid expensive.
Ok, not small, I admit, and perhaps the 12 mpg rating might be a tad off-putting. But there are compensations.

Stupid expensive? We shopped both of those and were quoted right around $26k with sunroof and a few other things.

That Prius can go as high as $36K with options, and VW is Germany's version of Kia. It's not worth that price, especially with the crappiest warranty available.
I'd kill for a good E46 touring.
