Hi everyone. I was trying to remove the front seal of my Miata's transmission, and FINALLY got it out. However, upon further inspection, it looks like there is a little "ding" on the outer portion of it along with some other surface marks that won't come off. If I was to put a new seal in here, would it leak? Should I just buy a new input shaft cover? Thanks!
(Also any tips on removing the rear main without screwing up)
Isn't that the oil pump?
Tip to remove: drive a small screw or two into the seal to give you something to grab. Or use a seal puller.

Thanks! I have one of those $12 HF seal pulling tools with the pointy ends. Not sure if thats the right tool for the job as I know its easy to scratch up the surface. Its the cover inside the front of the transmission, heres a picture of the whole thing:
Ooooh, transmission front seal. I wouldn't be too worried myself, that seems to be a very leak-resistant location. I'm not sure there's pressure behind it.

Thank you! You think I should add a little bit of black RTV just to be safe?
Probably wouldn't hurt, but obviously only on the OD of the seal.

Thanks! Yep, only on the OD where it mates with the surface that I circled a few of the points that made me nervous.

So just want to make sure Im okay here; maybe I'm being too paranoid lol. I got the input shaft cover back on with a new paper gasket. Its sticking a but out the side on one end, but I just want to make sure Im okay. I'd just hate to have to take it apart again due to a leak because it was a pain to remove the transmission. Thanks and sorry if they seem like dumb questions!

Make sure to torque and loc-tite those bolts. I had the lowest one come loose for a reason I was never able to determine (I had torqued them and the rest were all still tight) and then it drained all the oil into the bellhousing and blew the transmission up 900 miles from home, as well as contaminating my clutch with gear lube and junking that as well.

Just commenting on this post because i did something similar and would like some second opinions, I scratched the sealing surface of my trans shaft cover as well:
i emailed flyin miata support they said to just sand down the really deep scratches. please let me know if there is anything else i could do, it was my first time doing this job :/
The seal seals to the bore diameter, not the face.
If the bore diameter isn't scratched/gouged, it's all fine.
If it IS scratched/gouged, use a small scraper (or make one with a file and an old Sawzall blade or something) to smooth the sharp edges, put a blob of silicone there, and you'll still be fine.
