I found a low miles (kms) unmolested clean titled Evo in Vancouver.
I want it, rather badly.
I need a letter of compliance from Mitsu saying that it conforms to the US automotive standards.
AFAIK there's no reason it wouldn't.
Mitsu 'North America' says they won't do crap with a car not residing in the states.
Mitsu Canada has yet to get back to me.
My deposit is refundable on the condition that I'm unable to import the car, but I'd rather just... have the car.

Anyone have a contact at Mitsubishi they can point me to?

If it is a 2008 you should not need a letter. All Canadian cars post 1995 are homogenized to US standards. Only exception is if the car was a Japanese import to Canada.

Who exactly needs this letter of compliance?

State DMV?

In reply to NordicSaab:

Not exactly true. Canadian-market vehicles not offered in the U.S. (Nissan Micra, for example) are also ineligible for import.

This thread has lots of good info for anyone trying to import a car from Canada: http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/buying-a-newer-car-from-canada-and-importing-to-the-usa/99788/page1/

This whole importing from Canada idea is good for our southern cousins. A 300C SRT-8 is $13k. That's under $10k US!

  1. Mitsubishi Customer Service Cypress, CA (800) 222-0037

That is the only contact that is listed on the Border control website. Have you contacted an RI to help with all of the paperwork? They will need to do some other things such as the import tax and speedometer change to get the vehicle federalized. I have a feeling with out RI in your title, Mitsubishi could care less.

Also, with out an RI you may not be able to ever sell it. From the NHSTA site:

Only an RI may import non-conforming vehicles for resale. If you would like to bring non-conforming vehicles into the United States for resale, you must become an RI. Instructions on becoming an RI can be found at http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import/HowtobecomeanRI.pdf. The responsibilities of an RI are specified in Title 49, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 592, “Registered Importers of Vehicles Not Originally Manufactured to Conform to the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.”

Border agents need the letter of compliance, they give me 'thumbs up' paperwork fpr the DMV.

You'll need to log in to post.
