Just exhausting my options here. I’ve always liked the Maxima 3.5 and wondered if they last like their import V6 cousins ie: Toyota and Honda...

I think it's a good engine.  But there may be some years that had oil burning issues, like some Hondas did.   That thought came from way back in my head so it could be wrong.

A quick Googles indicates this was mainly a problem with the higher HP revier 350Z engines.

If you're going way-back (~2003) you could get a Maxima with an LSD and 6 speed manual.  Or you can get a Acura TL-S with Brembos, and an LSD-equipped 6MT.  No such luck with a Toyota.

My dad had a 2002 Infiniti I35 with the VQ35. It started consuming oil around the 150k mark and he sold it with 160-something. Was a good car/drivetrain otherwise, the biggest hindrance was the 4-speed automatic. As others have said, the same-era Maxima SE (I35 minus the makeup) could be had with three pedals and six gears.

I mean it seems to be a foregone conclusion that the vq35 will consume  oil. In the z car world it seems like every vq35 will burn oil at a different rate and that its normal.
