I know nothing about Mr. Alexander or the history this may be referring to. You experts take a look at this and tell me what you think. I just thought this was a strange thing to see on CL. I'm pretty sure this was never a NASCAR racer, looking at the glimpse of a front tire and the class lettering I'm thinking quarter mile..

'69 Cobra Jet - $100000

It's worth $500,000. Its only 4 in the world. Its a collectors item. It's one of Don Alexanders Nascar Racecar. It's a beautiful, wonderful, car. Its a 6 Bolt Main, asking for $100,000 and up.

Nascar ALSO Sponsored Drag racing for awhile, I think A knee jerk reaction to drivers leaving when they Outlawed 426 Hemi's. Petty had a rough time of it in 64-65,did O K in gassers but had a bad crash at Dallas Ga. with A/fx car.

I did not know that. Interesting stuff out there: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/nascar-drag-racing-history.259797/page-2

I'm guessing if this was run it was at the end of the NASCAR's drag years. Looks like the heyday was '66, but some of the cars shown in that HAMB thread are obviously closer to the '69 Cobra Jet Mustang seen in the ad.

I saw a bio for a Don Alexander that mentioned he wrote a few articles for GRM at some point. I wonder if it's the same guy?

6 bolt mains....?? Cobra Jet blocks were not finished with the same main bearing saddles as the 406, and the 427, each of those had cross bolted mains. But I don't know of any Ford FE engine running 6 bolt mains

Too many red flags to make the call from the ad. Listed as a 6 cylinder...maybe just a typo. VIN for a 390 car? Well they often used big block chassis for big builds back then. 6 bolt mains? He is just clueless here! If it had the 427 SOHC engine (4 bolt) it might be a winner. No mention of engine size or pictures of the engine. To much of a quick cheap ad for the price asked.

Ooooh boy, where to start... NASCAR did indeed have a few drag races in the early 60's, it never took off. When petty drag raced it was with the NHRA. Mustangs like this 69 did indeed run "NASCAR", but not the Grand National oval-track stuff, they ran a GT series called the Grand-American Challenge with races like the Daytona 250. No Cobra Jet ran in any of those.

What we actually have here is a 69 Mustang Sportsroof, likely a Mach 1 judging by the rear quarter scoops, with a very 1980's paint job on it, that ran in the NHRA as a drag car. S/G is Super Gas, which is an indexed bracket class at 10.90 IIRC. This car isn't 1 of 4, and it certainly isn't $100,000. Just another online dreamer, like the infamous "NASCAR Javelin".

That's a 70s paint job if I ever saw one.
