Not only do consumers want bigger, thirstier cars again now that gas prices have temporarily dipped, but building big cars will soon be the "low-hanging fruit" for automakers.

Sucks wading through a page of that reporter's opinion on how Obama's policy's bad points are Bush's fault, to get to the actual info.

I wonder if they think sanctions like this are helping our failing car industry?

I wonder if they tell us all to buy big cars, and invert the food pyramid, if we will rebel into granola loving exercise junkies.

It's unfortunate, but every time the gas prices go down, folks think they are returning to normal. They need to realize that one of these days they won't "fall back to normal". To PROD them into "right thinking" the government (tries) to ratchet up the mileage standards.

Duh, everyone knows that's the job of the mainstream media, Mtv Cribs, pimp my ride, retarded celebrities, and what ever other crap shows that tell us we all need Escalades and Hummers on 24's. You're not successful if you don't have one. You want to be successful, don't you?

all I've owned was a '84 Celebrity, '76 MGB, and a '98 eclipse beater, to be... a beater. You tell me?

And, notice how thoes things are all part of that "free market" i was talking about. Gov't is not. I choose to watch tv and read the news. The Gov't mandates.

Choice Vs. Mandate.

You made my own point better then I did.

And the thought police thing is from "1984"

I think they share equal blame. It's Bush's fault for setting the old policies and Obama's fault for building on them rather than tossing them out.

I thought people were failing to buy cars at all.

Oh, and $2 gas isn't quite back to normal. Its twice what gas cost back in 1999, just so's you know.

We'll see where gas prices are at the end of this recession. My guess. $3 average from 2010-2020, possibly more.

Agreed. Personally, I think the pressure should be more on O then B, simply because only one is president.

It is obvious where this reporters opinion lies. I guess i just miss journalisim. just the facts, please.

Sounds like (big) Gov't doesnt it? They want to clean up the air, and instead encourage larger cars.

eh. give me a modern TR-6.simple=cheap, FI, torquey six, no airbags. light. throw a cat on it, as they have finally gotten cheaper. ahhh. a sports car. by chance, it wont be too bad on gas now will it?

I know, I was mostly joking. My point was that the "thought police" will never do as good of a job as the media in brainwashing people into thinking they need crap that they don't need and can't afford. Rent to own wheel stores prove my point better than you or I could. If the government are the thought police, the mainstream news outlets are like the thought CIA, owned and operated by corporate america telling masses exactly what they need to do and buy to be safe/cool/get laid/etc., and it all costs money that people don't have, and that's why we're in the economic pickle that we're in. Sorry for going of on a tangent, please resume your regularly scheduled discussion.

Damn it. This is why the gov't sucks. They stick their nose into an industry they really don't really understand. Why can't we elect an enthusiast to the white house?

Id agree with you, except one thing.

at least these things that cost money can only do so if i elect to give them my money.

The gov't mandates taxes and spends that money with-lets be honest- no say from me.

y'know, like the auto bailouts? almost 75% of citizens polled were against it? Did it make a difference? Hell, did he care we didnt want that?

An auto company has to make the cars people want and if the people want big powerful land yachts you have to make the land yachts. It is a corporations job to make a profit. If you make a bunch of cars no one wants then you can't make a profit. I have a very big problem with the govt. telling people what they should think and by extension what they should drive. If Americans become concerned about mpg again the market will respond with cars that meet that need. The govt has no business making the decision for us.

OMG, it's the old scapegoat, Corporate America. 'cause, you know, every business, big or small in the country is linked together in a common, malevelolent goal.

I remember when Microsoft was a handful of nerds in downtown Seattle. At what point does a business of a handful of people become evil incarnate, when it's the same people running it?

Corporate America is not a single entity, and is MOSTLY comprised of smaller businesses, making money for the business owner (you realize that corporations can consist of as little as one person, right?) in competition with other business owners serving the same market. And that market is comprised of people that determine what they want, and the advertising serves to tell those people WHO to get what they want from, and why they should choose one vendor over another. That's competition, and you do get to choose. When I was starting my business, there wasn't a welcoming committee giving out secret handshakes and successful ad campains that forced people to buy from me.

To echo the previous sentiment, you can still choose not to buy from them or to buy from anyone. You can't choose to opt out of government.
